Preferred name
What languages do you speak, and at what fluency level? (Please include your English proficiency.) A small amount of German; fluent English
What region(s) of the world do you have experience with, and what kind of experience do you have? (“Experience” can mean you have lived or worked there or are currently living or working there; you’re familiar with the culture and language; etc.) Northwest Europe is my region - I live in the UK, but recently lived in Ireland. I recognise that white, global minority editors continue to be overly represented in the movement - especially as Board members - and I think it's important be open about this. I'm putting myself forward after a lot of thought: I am a researcher and curator, as well as being an unpaid carer. The latter brings a perspective to the movement that is not often discussed outside spaces for minoritised genders, which I think is useful to be more heard.
What Wikimedia project(s) do you actively edit? And in what language(s)? English Wikipedia, some Wikidata, a little Commons (I love the mobile app), Wikiquote (when I remember!)
What affiliate(s) are you actively involved with? In what capacity are you involved? Do you serve in a leadership role or have you in the past? I am a volunteer on the Community Development Committee for Wikimedia UK
Have you served on any committees (movement-related or otherwise)? And what was your role on the committee(s)? I was a volunteer on the NWE Grants Committee from 2021-2023.
Please describe any experience you have with conflict resolution and/or consensus building. Brief answers for conflict resolution and consensus building are a challenge, as both communication strategies depend a lot on the context of the issue. In my experience with conflict resolution as a trustee, firstly you need to listen deeply to those whose points do not align with your own and ask whether you empathise with their position, and does this search for empathy shift your own perspective. It may do, it may not. If there is still a gap, how can you narrate the perspective you are bringing in ways that might influence those that are hesitant. Sometimes bringing personal experience can shift the ground e.g. "this happened to me and it was a barrier" - we all bring unique points of view to decision-making. Consensus, however, isn't when everyone agrees with one person, but more that all decision-makers shift to find a response that moves the situation forwards. This takes time, and compassion, and importantly recognising when your voice is not the one that needs to be heard.
In your ideal world, what does the affiliate model and ecosystem look like? Judging from some of the most passionate discussion at Wikimania 2024, it seems that whilst there are huge strengths in the locality and language based models of work, demand for more thematic affiliates is growing. It seems like there is scope for change and adaptation. The challenge is thinking about how the needs to existing audiences continue to be fulfilled, whilst revising structure and capacity to work collaboratively on thematic issues. Additionally, I'd love to see more affiliate systems be non-hierarchical, I think there's lots of potential for more formally co-operative models to be adopted.
In your ideal world, what are AffCom’s roles and responsibilities in relation to the movement and affiliates? For me it seems to be advocacy, whatever the size and age of affiliate. In lots of conversations, it seems that support and advice is key, but their could also be more cheerleading and celebration of the journey!
What role within AffCom are you most interested in: advisory or voting member? Advisory
