Africa Growth Pilot
The Africa Growth Pilot is an experimental Wikimedia Foundation program aimed at growing the active editor base in sub-Saharan Africa.
Its first phase, conducted in 2023, was a four-module series of live tutorials on core policies. It validated the hypothesis that high-quality tutoring on core policies significantly reduces reversion rates of edits, even among existing editors.
Its second phase, in planning as of 2024, will be an online self-paced course on the WikiLearn platform. This phase will test the hypothesis that such a course can produce competent new editors at a better return on investment than in-person workshops to general audiences.
The program is designed and run by a cross-departmental project team, headed by Dumisani Ndubane.
