Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation

Timeline
edit- July 2024: The lawsuit is filed for 20 million Indian rupees.[1]
- 20 August 2024: A hearing for the case is held.
- 5 September 2024: The court warns the WMF about its noncompliance with the order and warns that the court might ask the government to block Wikipedia in India.[2]
- 16 October 2024: The WMF receives an order from the court.[3]
- 21 October 2024: The English Wikipedia article is removed and replaced by an official notice by the WMFOffice role account.[4]
- 6 November 2024: The English Wikipedia community breaks its onwiki silence with an issue of The Signpost focusing on the community's reaction against the lawsuit.[5]
- 9 November 2024: The English Wikipedia community issues an open letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. It currently has over 1300 signatories, the most ever in Wikipedia history.[6]
- 14 November 2024: The court issues a summons to individual editors who allegedly defamed Asian News International.[7]
- 14 November 2024: A blackout of English Wikipedia is proposed in protest. However, an RfC on the proposal closes against it.[8]
- 2 December 2024: "In India, the Foundation reached an agreement in litigation to continue a case without providing user data to the other party".[9][10]
- 16 December 2024: Another hearing was expected to be held.[7]
- 8 January 2025: Listed to be heard again on 24 February 2025.[11]
- 24 February 2025: Relisted to 14 May 2025[12]
- 22 March 2025: "Wikimedia Foundation filed an appeal before the Supreme Court of India, challenging the takedown order. The appeal was admitted and the Supreme Court issued notice to the concerned parties on March 17, 2025." [13].
- 2 April 2025: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered a take down or removal of allegedly defamatory content and description of news agency ANI Media Private Limited on its Wikipedia page, [the WMF is mandated to] remove allegedly defamatory statements published against ANI on its Wikipedia page titled “Asian News International.”[14]
