Beyond the Canvas: Highlighting Black Artists on Wikipedia

Overview

Held on Saturday, 11th of May 2024 at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education in Imo state, the activities of the in-person BLT launch in celebration of the Black Artists Beyond the Canvas: Highlighting Black Artists on Wikipedia, focuses on creating and translating Wikipedia articles that focuses on the Contemporary Black Artists and their works.

Outcome

The project has an infusion of mini translate-a-thon contest which has a total 28 participants registered on the event dashboard and can be accessed on the event dashboard. At the end of contest, 386 Articles were created, 1.08K Articles Edited, and 2.96M Bytes Added. More details of the project can be accessed on the meta page.

In-person event 2: 14th May 2024

Overview

The event took place at Awka, Anambra state, on Tuesday 14th of May 2024 between 10.00am - 02.00pm WAT. The activities of the in-person BLT launch in celebration of the Black Artists Beyond the Canvas: Highlighting Black Artists on Wikipedia, focused on translating labels, descriptions, and aliases of Wikidata Items that focused on the Contemporary Black Artists and their works. Training was held for the participants on how to contribute to Wikidata and an edit-a-thon followed immediately.

Outcome

Irrespective of the challenges we faced with the dashboard and the event registration tool during the event, we were able to use other means to track contributions of participants. After the dashboard issue was rectified, and as recorded on the event dashboard, 349 items were edited and a total of 827 edits was made. Read the feedback from participants.

Challenges

The event dashboard was not loading properly, so we used other means to track participants' edits as at the time of the event.
Participants experienced difficulties while trying to register with the event registration tool here. We had to recreate the event on mainspace for easy coordination

Online Activities

Launch

The onlie lunch took place on 21st of May 2024, We had a total of 26 participants present at the online lunch. The participants were introduced to the BLT project and trainings on how to contribute was done for Wikpedia, Wikidata and Wikiqoute.

Contest

The online contest was for the period of 4 weeks. The dashboard and Xtool were used to track edits of 56 registered participants. The contest ended by 11:59pm WAT on 18th of July 2024, outcomes were recorded on three projects the participants contributed to, namely; Igbo Wikipedia, Igbo Wikiquote, and Wikidata respectively.

Wikipedia

In general, at the end of the contest, a total of 4.81K articles were created, 10.1K articles were edited, and a total edit of 18.9K. See event dashboard here for comprehensive information.

At the end of the contest, a total 747 qoutes were added to Igbo Wikiqoute.. See event dashboard here for comprehensive information.

Wikidata

Items were created and edited. A total number of 365 items were created, 1.99K descriptions added in Igbo, 1.67K references added and a general revision of 13.3K. See Wikidata statistics for additional information.
