CIS-A2K//Work plan July 2014 - June 2015/TTT Program

Introduction

edit

As part of CIS-A2K efforts at further strengthen Wikimedia volunteers in India, the team will organise Train the Trainer Program.

The program will help build capacity and enable community members to conduct outreach sessions independently or with minimal support to introduce Wikipedia to prospective editors in their respective Indian languages. Participants will be trained on various aspects such as presenting with impact, engaging with the audience, significance of body language, outreach follow ups etc. Program will also include groups discussions on ideas, learnings, challenges faced during outreach sessions.

Work Done so Far

edit

A similar four day residency program was organised by CIS-A2K last year, details of which can be found here. It was quite successfully executed and 20 Indian Wikimedians from across 9 language communities took part in this program. Based on the learning and experience of executing this project CIS-A2K will tweak the program design and will conduct 2 such programs in the coming year and hope to reach out to 50 active Wikimedia volunteers.

As part of Train the Trainer program participants from Punjab, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala were trained on effectively organising Wiki training workshops, soft skills and wikipedia skills. Some of the key highlights of the event are:

  • Twenty Wikimedians from 10 cities speaking 8 languages attended the 4-day Train The Trainer
  • Three Telugu Wikipedians who attended Train the Trainer program played significant role in organising the decennial celebrations of Telugu Wikipedia.
  • A workshop on digitizing books was organised.
  • Post the program, many Wikipedians organised effective outreach sessions in their cities.

Implementation Plan

edit

Last year’s Train the Trainer program showed promising results. With the inputs from the participants, more effective components would be added to the training this time. The program will widely include:

  • Sessions with interactive training run by professional consultants on how to conduct outreach in an effective manner – training on presentation skills, audience engagement, public speaking etc. It will include mock presentations, with video recording for feedback.
  • Field trip aiming to train the participants on how to organise an effective photothon; in addition, participants will also add pictures from the field trip to Wikimedia Commons for enhancing and improving articles on Indian language Wikipedias.
  • A workshop on digitizing books was organised.
  • MediaWiki workshops will be organised for those interested in technical aspects.

Projected Outcomes

edit
  • Provide training and presentation skills which can be applied during Wikipedia workshops
  • Help participants infuse lessons learnt into their outreach and community activities.
  • In addition to the already executed soft skills training, need to explore more areas of expertise needed
  • Train participants on journey from a Stub class article to a Featured Article.
  • Filing bugs at Bugzilla
  • Understanding Mediawiki interface better for (if at all gets rolled out) Visual Editor
  • Advance editor training on topics such as: running bot, edit tools, web linkups, templates etc.
