The program will place a strong emphasis on experiential learning, encouraging participants to learn through practical experiences and hands-on activities. Moreover, the workshop will focus on identifying and addressing biases that might hinder the growth of inclusive and diverse communities.

Train The Trainer 8th Iteration Report

edit

The 8th iteration of Train The Trainer unfolded over three days in September and October (29th September to 1st October 2023), with the main event spanning three days, excluding day 0. Below are the key highlights from Day 0 to Day 3:

Day 0: Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere

edit

Day 0 commenced at 7:00 PM, designed to foster a friendly atmosphere for all participants. The evening session commenced with welcoming the participants and an introduction to the Wiki Buddies concept, emphasizing its importance by Pavan Santosh. Participants were divided into 5 groups, initiating introduction sessions within each group. Following the group introductions, a larger group introduction session extended for more than an hour, providing an opportunity for participants and organizers to acquaint themselves with each other and their work. The session was marked by the enthusiastic involvement of all participants, who actively shared interesting facts about one another.

Day 1

edit

The day kicked off with an engaging "Question of the Day," prompting participants to provide one-word answers. The TTT program featured a diverse range of interactive and productive sessions. Tanveer Hasan initiated the day with an introduction to TTT and UCoC.

Subsequently, 26 participants were divided into 5 groups known as WikiBuddies for an informative and interactive "eConnect with Wikimedians" session, led by Pavan Santosh. Each Wikibuddies group connected with an experienced Wikimedian over a video call where they shared how they started as a Wikimedian, their experiences within the movement, interacted with the group, introduced them to the inspiring work of few other Wikimedians and provided them insights about the future of Wikimedia movement from their perspective. Five selected Wikimedians Arya Joshi, Bharathesha Alasandemajalu, Chaduvari, Frederick Noronha and Rohini connected with one group each as part of this session. Logistically these sessions were arranged in the conference hall and 2 other small rooms within the hotel.

After 45 minutes, the program delved into a group activity named "Wikimedians' Motivations and Challenges to Contribute." This interactive session or activity involved charts and sticky notes, with three rounds that actively engaged all group members. During the final round, each group presented their outcomes to the others.

Jinoy and Nivas conducted two insightful sessions: "Different Ways of Outreach: Issues and Best Practices" and "How to Track the Impact of a Program." These sessions drew from their experiences, offering valuable insights and introducing essential tools for tracking impact.

Day 1 also featured two crucial sessions. 'The Wikipedia Library: History, Present, and Future of the Project' generated significant interest among community members, sparking discussions about potential collaborations. The penultimate session focused on 'Wikisource Story: Hands-on Session around Relicensing and Digitization of Books.' This impactful session included parallel tracks on Relicensing and a training session on Digitization, leaving a lasting impression on participants. Due to time constraints, we had to split the session into two, and the swap of participant groups between parallel tracks occurred on Day 2.

Day 2

edit

Day 2 commenced with a group photo, setting a vibrant tone for the day's activities. The sessions began with "eConnect with Affiliates & Organizations" conducted in the same five groups. Following this, Ranjith Siji from the Kerala Wikimedians User Group led a session titled "Wiki Loves Muziris and Other User Group Activities," focusing on a photography project and sharing related experiences with TTT participants.

The next session, conducted virtually by Veronica Thamaini, centred on 'Community Resources and Various Funding Opportunities for Wikimedians to Make More Impact.' Veronica discussed available funds and funding opportunities for communities and volunteers. An unexpected technical glitch in the venue's sound system created issues for this session, and as a result, Tanveer Hasan, who was present at the venue, supported the Q&A.

The "Wikisource Story: Hands-on Session around Relicensing and Digitization of Books" continued from Day 1, with participants switching between sessions attended on Day 1 and those attended on Day 2.

The final session of the day was a virtual presentation on "Communicating Impact" by Rachit Sharma. He delved into the significance of the Diff platform and how individuals within the Wikimedia community can leverage it to promote their activities, events, and initiatives effectively.

The day concluded with an educational tour of Fort Kochi, a popular heritage cluster in the city. Balagopal, a professional guide, led the tour by explaining the historical journey of Fort Kochi and pointing out prominent landmarks. The group of over 30 participants and organizers started the journey from the hotel on a bus, then continued onto an exciting water metro, followed by a large flat-bottom boat, and finally, on foot. Despite a few interruptions caused by rainy weather, the journey continued through the heritage sites of Fort Kochi, touching on a history spanning centuries.

Day 3

edit

The day commenced with "WikiConference India 2023: What Made It Happen!" by Nivas and Nitesh, during which they discussed the processes, outcomes, and experiences of WikiConference India 2023. Following this, a session titled "How Do We Make Editing More Inclusive and Accessible: Panel Discussion" was conducted, featuring four participants or volunteers from different language communities engaging in panel discussions, moderated by Padmini Roy. The subsequent session, "Outreach and Inclusion: A Story of Curating a Delhi Resettlement Colony with Open Knowledge Platforms," was led by Padmini Roy and presented insightful information based on research data.

The last sessions of TTT were conducted by Tanveer Hasan, covering “Ongoing Major initiatives of Global Movement”, "Review and Planning" and "Building Connections and Empowering Communities," focusing on the future of Wikimedia communities and the Wikimedia movement.
