Campaigns/Future of WikiForHumanRights/Timelines and Next Steps

We want to hear from you! The following are the proposed steps for sharing input on the future of WikiforHumanRights:

August (post-Wikimania) - November 2024: Announcements & Collection of Community Inputs:
- 5 September 2024: Announcement on Meta & Survey Circulation
- 21 September - 30 November 2024: Regional engagement through regional coordinators and local organizers. These calls will be held in the following regions, with active participation and regional coordinators to facilitate the process:
  - Maghreb region: 24 September at 16:00 UTC
  - Sub-Saharan Africa: 25 September 2024 at 15:00 UTC
  - Arabic community: 23 September at 18:00 UTC
  - Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia: 17 October 2024
  - Latin America and Caribbean: TBC
  - South Asia, East, Southeast Asia and the Pacific: 24 October at 10:00 UTC

November - December 2024: Synthesizing Findings
- Synthesize draft transition plan
- Share with regional coordinators for feedback
January - March 2025: Sharing Learnings and Draft Transition Plan Presentation
- Global call to share findings and learnings from the consultations. Date: TBD
April 2025: Finalization of the transition plan with clear roles and responsibilities

We need your help to learn what it would take for communities to own this campaign and what support would be needed from the Foundation going forward. To do this, we will be exploring the following questions in conversations with community members looking to share feedback with us.

What is the Wikimedia Foundation looking to understand about our support for campaigns in this process? Specifically, we would like to understand the following:

What have we learned from this campaign over the past few years?
- Where is there an opportunity for growth?
- What has the impact of the campaign been so far?
- What has worked well and what needs improvement?
What should this campaign look like in your region and at the global level?
What should the role of the Foundation be in supporting community content campaigns going forward?
- What is the specific support needed for the WikiforHumanRights campaign?
- What is the general support needed?
How do we brand the work on this campaign with a focus on Human Rights?
- What is your vision of the work under the banner of WikiforHumanRights?
What support would you need to be able to continue to organize their work on Climate & Sustainability?
- How would you brand this work on Climate & Sustainability?
  - Did the subtitle “Knowledge for a Sustainable Future” work for your community this year?
How do you view the connection between Climate & Sustainability and Human Rights in this campaign?

This would not be the first time that a campaign transitions from WMF-led coordination, to movement-led coordination. In a similar fashion to the #1Lib1Ref campaign, where the Foundation played an active role in coordinating community efforts, over time community’s engagement and leadership on the campaign has matured and deepened - with communities better able to advise WMF on the targeted support needed.

We understand that WikiForHumanRights is a beloved campaign in the community. We are thus committed to restructuring this campaign in a participatory and inclusive manner. As we begin the early consultations about this transition with the movement, we welcome input from all community members who have participated in the campaign to help co-shape the future of the campaign.
