Wikimedia Community of Metlaoui User Group is a pioneering initiative dedicated to empowering young people in Metlaoui, a vibrant city in southern Tunisia, by fostering their interest and participation in Wikimedia projects. Established to bridge the gap between curiosity and accessibility, the Community provides a supportive environment for individuals eager to explore the world of free knowledge sharing, regardless of their access to personal technology. Equipped with eight laptops, the Community ensures that lack of resources is not a barrier to learning and contribution.

Wikimedia Community of Metlaoui User Groupi: A Gateway to Wikimedia for Southern Tunisia's Youth

Wikimedia Community of Metlaoui User Group aspires to create a community of young, passionate contributors who embody the principles of collaboration, creativity, and open knowledge. By equipping participants with essential digital and research skills, the User Groupaims to empower the youth to document their culture, heritage, and local knowledge, ensuring their voices resonate on a global platform. Inclusive Opportunities for Growth The club’s doors are open to everyone in the community, particularly those who lack the tools to engage in Wikimedia projects independently. This inclusivity ensures that anyone with the desire to learn and contribute can do so, creating a diverse and vibrant community of knowledge creators.

Wikimedia Community of Metlaoui User Groupi hosts an array of engaging and impactful activities that cater to various aspects of Wikimedia’s mission:

1. Wikipedia Workshops
   These hands-on sessions introduce participants to the fundamentals of Wikipedia editing, including article creation, content improvement, and adhering to Wikipedia's guidelines. Participants gain valuable skills in writing, research, and critical thinking.
2. Presentations on Wikimedia Projects
   Educational presentations offer insights into the broader Wikimedia ecosystem, including platforms like Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikisource. These sessions inspire participants to explore various avenues for contribution.
3. Wikipedia Edit-a-thons
   Focused, collaborative events where participants work together to improve Wikipedia articles. These edit-a-thons often revolve around specific themes, such as local history, cultural heritage, or global campaigns like Art+Feminism.
4. Wiki Loves Events
   The User Groupactively participates in renowned international Wikimedia photography competitions like Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth. These events encourage members to photograph and document Tunisia’s rich natural and cultural heritage, contributing to Wikimedia Commons and enhancing global awareness.
5. Photowalking
   Guided photowalks take participants into the heart of Metlaoui and surrounding regions, capturing high-quality images of landscapes, architectural treasures, and local traditions. These photographs enrich Wikimedia Commons and serve as resources for educational and cultural preservation.
6. Community Outreach Programs Beyond regular activities, the User Groupalso engages with the local community through outreach initiatives. These include school-based programs, public workshops, and events designed to raise awareness about the importance of free knowledge sharing and digital literacy.

Fiscal sponsor

The Culture and Science Association of Metlaoui will act as the official fiscal sponsor for all Wikimedia activities undertaken by our user group. This partnership will involve the Association managing all financial transactions, including the handling of donations, grants, and other funding sources. Additionally, the Association will represent our user group in dealings with both government agencies and private institutions, facilitating any necessary collaborations, partnerships, or administrative tasks. This sponsorship ensures that our financial operations are conducted in compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements while maintaining transparency and accountability in all financial matters.
