Like in previous years, we have planned for a wide variety of programs based on the interests and strengths of the active members of the user group, who have proposed these plans and committed to them. While some of the programs are continuation and extensions of our previous programs, including last year's plans, a few are planned to start from this year and are likely to continue for the next few years.

Wiki Docus

We started this program last year (2024-25) to video-document the cultural heritage and oral history of West Bengal. The goal of this program is to produce at least three documentary movies per year. We choose the subjects from a list prepared by our research team. The pre-production includes researching the topic, creating the script and chalking out the shooting schedule. We reach out to experts on the subject for guidance. The films are shot by the volunteers. Lastly, for post-production, we hire video editors, voice-over artists, and an audio studio to complete the film. The films are in Bengali, with English subtitles.

We are also creating one e-book per documentary. It would contain photographs and literature on the subject. We would be printing a few copies of the book to showcase our activities during various outreach programs. We will upload all the video footage, photographs and e-books, including the completed documentaries to Wikimedia Commons and create or edit relevant Wikidata items.

For information, in the previous annual plan, we successfully documented Leto Gan, a dying folk drama of Birbhum district, Dasai Parab, a festival of the Santal people, and an urban culture of handmade hot-air paper balloons called Fanus, all of which are underrepresented on Wikimedia sites. The equipment we bought in the previous annual plan helped us to produce good-quality video and audio footage for our documentaries. The uploads will be concluded before the reporting time.

Wiki Docus 2024-25 Shooting Stills

Our plan for the coming year will be to create at least six documentaries. We have successfully created contacts with local researchers and experts and are working on the list on which we will be working.

The two aspects which we are aiming to address this year are working on the quality of videos and being more productive during post production. Although our current setup is producing good quality videos, we need some more lights so that we can easily shoot even when the natural light is not conducive. To be more productive during post production, we are planning to buy a professional video editing software. This would stop our dependency on the availability of editing studios, and volunteers will be able to use it for short tutorial videos. The cost of software will be a one-time fee.

The probable list of the topics which is to be covered are folk music and dance like Bhanjo gaan, Hapu gaan, Chhad patano gaan, Raibenshe, folk puppetry like Chadar Badar and folk villages of Sundarbans.

Wiki Documents Bengal Terracotta

We started this program last year (2024-25) to document the terracotta panels of the temples and mosques of Bengal in detail. The terracotta temples and mosques of West Bengal are full of beautiful panels. Due to a lack of maintenance and improper conservation, many are getting damaged. In temples, a group of panels together depict various mythological, religious or historically relevant stories. Hence, it is important to document them systematically and serially. Also, as some panels have minute details, the experts need high-quality images to understand and write the text. This project aims to solve these by documenting the terracotta panels systematically and in detail. The history professors in our team will be working on the meaning of the panels and the image description will be written by them. We are also creating an eBook with images of the temples and the panels with a brief history and the stories depicted in the panels. A few copies of the book will be printed to showcase our activities during various outreach programs. This year, we have successfully documented quite a few temples with rich terracotta work, the images of which will be uploaded before the reporting time. We plan to continue this project to document more terracotta structures.

Wiki Museums

We started this program last year (2024-25) to document museums diligently. Apart from a couple of others, our main documentation this year was on the Museum of Santal Culture located in the village of Bishnubati in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Apart from the images, we are working with them to create Wikidata items for each artifact and create video/audio descriptions for them. This year we plan to continue this program with a few new museums.

We also plan to create an open source web and/or mobile application which will help people access the vast museum data from Wikimedia sites in a more user-friendly manner. The images of the artifacts will be retrieved from Wikimedia Commons, and the metadata of them will be retrieved from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons and displayed in a designed front-end. After release, this app can be presented to those museums which do not have the resources to digitize their collections or are hesitant to open up their collections as this app might provide them with free and easy to approach alternative than other existing proprietary and expensive applications and technologies, in turn bringing more musuem contents to Wikimedia sites.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 In India

Like the past few years, the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group plans to organize the Wiki Loves Monuments in India in 2025. This year, instead of organizing offline workshops, we are planning to upload videos online. This way we will be able to use them every year. We are also planning to create a reduced list of monuments this year focusing on monuments which do not have any images on Wikimedia Commons. This will help stop the huge flow of images of the same few widely known monuments taken from the same angle as some previously won images. This year we are expecting a lesser number of photographs but which will bring more value to the competition, thus aiming for quality images over quantity of images.

Winners of the Wiki Loves Monuments 2019-2024 in India

WiKomix

Our aim in this project is to reach comic book lovers and motivate them to volunteer on various Wikimedia projects. We started this program last year (2024-25) and are in the final stage of creating the first book. Like this year, the coming year's book will have comics on the activities of Wikimedia, some volunteers of our User Group showcasing their work and why they do it, and the projects of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group.

Our initial plan was to create a 25-page book, but due to the amount of data available to us and also for printing technicalities, we are planning to make it a 32-page book this year. The free comic book will be published digitally in Bengali and English. We will work with professional comic artists and scriptwriters on this project. We will print a few copies for showcasing at various events.

Wiki Loves Your City - Kolkata

The Wiki Loves Your City - Kolkata program plans to document the ever-changing character of Kolkata. The project will work on several lists.

  • The first is the list of heritage buildings published by the local Municipal Government.
  • The second will include buildings of local celebrities not included in the heritage list.
  • The third will have important institutes, organizations and businesses.
  • The fourth list will cover cemeteries and memorials.
Kolkata photographs

We also plan to document any house or a part of it with architecture representing a specific era. E.g., railings, designs, doors, balconies, windows etc.. A lot of these are being demolished in favour of modern houses. As they don’t have heritage tags, most are not documented, and a part of history is lost.

Most of the User Group members working in Wikimedia Commons are from Kolkata. As a result, it would be possible to document the above easily. All images uploaded as part of this project will include the full address of the building/memorial for future reference.

Digitization at the Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room

Digitization by a paid Wikimedian-in-residence

Last year, we have started a digitization project with the Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room, a century old library in Kolkata. CIS-A2K has lent one of their spare scanner and a laptop to the project. A Wikimedian-in-residence has been assigned to digitize the rare books in the library, post process them and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Background support is provided to check duplicate copies of those materials over internet, add metadata of those books on Wikidata and link them back to Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource. We are continuing the project next year too.

Digitization at the Federation Hall Society library

We have started a promising conversation with another century old library run by the Federation Hall Society, Kolkata to digitize their collection of public domain books. Like Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room, we intend to setup a digitization center there train and assign a Wikimedian-in-residence who will be responsible for scanning and uploading of their materials.

Re-licensing and digitization of books on Santal and indigenous people from authors around Bolpur

As part of our partnership with Ghosaldanga Bishnubati Adibasi Trust, a community based organization focused on development of Santal way of life in two villages nearby Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, we are planning to setup a digitization center there. The aim is to convince authors, who reside around the area, to re-license their books on Santal and other indigenous people of the region written and published in different languages and digitize those materials with assignments of two persons. This program will bring under-represented literature of the indigenous people into the open knowledge of Wikimedia and will be utilized on Wikisource in future. The trust has primarily agreed to the proposal in a promising way and is ready to provide a space and necessary basic infrastructure.

Bangla Wikisource workshops and associated activities

The user group is planning for at least 4-6 comprehensive physical workshops around Bangla Wikisource in Kolkata for people who care more about language and literature. The partners and venues are not confirmed now, but there have been primary promising discussions. Through these regular workshops and follow-ups, we aim to bring new active contributors and language technology expertsto Bengali Wikisource.

Microscopic photo and video documentation of fresh water microorganisms

The user group intends to support a plan coming from a community member to capture high resolution microscopic photographs and videos of fresh water microorganisms to be collected from water-bodies from southern part of West Bengal and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Surprisingly, the number of such digital contents are currently not well represented on Wikimedia Commons, contrary to expectation.  The user group would like to invest one time on building a very small setup with a microscope and accessories, so that such contents can be captured and made available for the future too.

Logistics and Infrastructure support for volunteers and project leads

The user group has tried to improve the working infrastructure of community leads and volunteers and will scale it up this year. A Magnus MX21i-Tr Freedom Trinocular Microscope LED with battery back-up. a Sony Alpha a6700 camera body and a few accessories will be purchased for the microscopic photo and video documentation. We are also trying to borrow at least two CZur 18 Pro Scanners for the digitization projects from different sources, but if that can not be managed somehow, then we might have to purchase them.

When starting the Wiki Docus project last year, we already purchased the camera and audio recording equipment. However, it looks like our requirements for the lights are not sufficient, especially for indoor interviews, and for that we have to complete that setup.

We will also buy DaVinci Resolve Studio editing software, which will help us to be more productive as we won't need to wait for studio slots. Also, it could be used to edit tutorials by volunteers. It has a lifetime license. A 5 TB Cloud Storage from Google would be bought for a year to store video and audio files during post-production, and the storage would be used by other volunteers of the user group for any similar requirements. Adobe Lightroom Subscription for a year will be bought for a volunteer contributing high-quality images to support raw conversion, image processing and quality image submission.

We will also support active community volunteers with internet upon request, as before.

Yes, we will be working with several external partners for these activities.

  • Ghosaldanga Bishnubati Adibasi Trust: This community based organization operates in the villages of Ghoshaldanga and Bishnubati in the district of Birbhum for development of Santal community of the region. The user group has partnered with the organization to digitally document the culture, heritage and tradition of Santal community. Last year, the user group has documented the Museum of Santal Culture, run by this organization along with culinary and a few intangible cultural heritage of the region with their active support. This year, the user group will continue to foster the working relationship with digitally preserving a unique tradition of Santal puppetry named Chadar Badar. The user group also intends to set up a digitization center in the organization library to help relicense and digitize non-fiction and fiction literature related to Santal people and culture written by authors from around in different languages.
  • Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room: Last year, the user group has established a digitization setup at this century old library in Kolkata with logistical support from CIS-A2K. A Wikimedian-in-residence has been trained and assigned to digitize the copyright free books collected in this library, which are getting uploaded for Bangla Wikisource. This year, the user group will continue the digitization project in the library. The details of the GLAM project can be found here.
  • Federation Hall Society Library: The user group has engaged in a promising conversation with this century old library of Kolkata. The library authorities have agreed to provide a space for digitization of their contents.
