Rungh Cultural Society is not-profit society in British Columbia Canada that focuses its work on Indigenous, Black and people of colour artists and communities. We publish a magazine, manage an archive, and engage in various initiatives.  [1] 

Since 2019, Rungh has been active with Art and Feminism to host Wikipedia Edit-a-thons with in partnership with the Surrey Art Gallery ( [2] ). In 2024, Rungh launched the 2024 Rungh Wikipedia Scholars program ( [3]). 

Rungh is applying for funding for the 2025 Rungh Wikipedia Scholars program. We plan to accept seven (7) scholars and work with them to engage in education about Wikipedia, Art and Feminism, IBPOC identified artists, research, creation of Wikipedia entries, and public engagement events. We plan to encourage the Scholars and the public who attend to create and edits Wikipedia entries about women, LGBTQ2S+, gender non-binary, people of colour, Black and Indigenous artists, creators, organizations and movements. We will apply an intersectional lens which respectfully engages with  issues of race, class, privilege, disability, and sexuality. Our focus is to create new pages, where possible. These new pages will also be announced on the Rungh platform to draw attention and to create a dialogue with new audiences.

Timeline:March 8  - Rungh will partner with Surrey Art Gallery for a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon event ("Critical Collaborations"  which will encourage attendees to research and create Wikipedia entries (See [4] )

March 15 - Rungh will partner with Centre A Gallery for a reading group event with artist Rahat Kurd as part of the 2025 Art + Feminism series of event which Centre A is planning. (See [5] )

FUNDING IS BEING SOUGHT FOR BELOW 2025 SCHOLARS PROGRAM, WORKSHOPS AND EVENT

April 2025 - Select scholars and begin prep sessions with scholars to equip them with necessary research and editing skills. Rungh is a partner with Wikimedia Canada and will work with Chelsea Chiovelli, Program Officer  Wikimedia Canada, to workshop research and editing sessions. Rungh has hosted successful sessions from 2019-2024. There will be three online workshops with in-person follow ups, where possible.

May - July 2025 - Scholars will conduct research, draft entries, and communicate with Rungh's Project Lead, Zool Suleman, as needed. Scholars will also be urged to write "reflection" pieces which trace their journey as they learn about Wikipedia, find a topic/subject to write about, conduct research, and create their entries. These reflection pieces will be published in Rungh Magazine. 

August 9, 2025 - Launch event - online and in person (at either Centre A or BLAC Arts Centre [6] to be finalized). The 2025 Rungh Wikipedia Scholars will present their completed Wikipedia entries after they have been submitted to Wikipedia for posting.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

For the 2025 Rungh Wikipedia Scholars program we will build upon the 2024 program and our partnerships with the Surrey Art Gallery and Centre A Gallery since 2019. Our focus will be on racialized artists, creators, and communities. The public programs will take place in Vancouver's Historic Chinatown and in Greater Vancouver in the City of Surrey (a region with a large South Asian, Asian, MENA, and other racialized communities).

Rungh will be promoting the program via social media posts on Instagram, Twitter (X), and on Rungh's arts platform. 

The scholars will be selected in partnership with the BLAC Arts Centre, the University of British Columbia, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Simon Fraser University. In addition, member of the public will participate as they wish by attending the in person or the online sessions. The main focus in the scholars program. The public component in when the scholars present their research and Wikipedia entries. The public component will the events held on March 8, March 15 and August 9.
