A clean way to add footnotes, references, or sources - not inline, but at the end? Open

Description

Over the years, I've been confronted with this problem in several forms:

  • On Wikisource (where this problem is most pertinent), it is common to want to add footnotes at the end. For example, this helps with the diff-y style of proofreading/validating that I often do, where I retype the entire text of the page from scratch and then diff it against the previous version (because putting the footnote at the end aligns perfectly with how an OCR engine would read it - at the end). In particular, this becomes particularly pertinent if you want to format a poem using a poem tag. (If you add newlines in the footnote but put the footnote inline, the poem tag will add these newlines to the output.) I've tried to solve this with wikisource:Template:Iref, but the problem with that template is that if you put multiple invisible references (or maybe even just one? IDK), an unsightly gap will appear in the transcluded version, for example in wikisource:The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll/Chapter III. (If you look at the generated HTML, the gap is due to extra <p> tags.) A clean way to do this would be extremely helpful for the Wikisource community.
  • On Wikidata, I often find myself copying-and-pasting references. There's in fact a gadget to do so (and I have it installed). However, it seems like the repetition of bibliographic data is redundant. The idea of moving all references into their own items has been floated (and on Wikidata it's even quasi-policy!). However, this is not exactly a panacea because often I find myself citing the item's own identifiers when sourcing statements for that very item.
  • On Wikipedia... most editors don't care I guess? We do have wikipedia:Template:Sfn and friends for citing books, but usage of this is inconsistent at best.

If there was a clean way to add references, footnotes, or sources to the end of a page, I would really appreciate it.
