Wikipedia-eigenen Kurz-URL-Dienst
Merged with Create URL Shortener extension for Wikimedia wikis
- Problem: Wiki links are not permanent (unstable) and under some circumstances very long (Wikipedia own short url service) / de: Wiki-Links sind nicht permanent ("instabil") und unter Umständen sehr lang (Wikipedia-eigenen Kurz-URL-Dienst)
- Who would benefit / Wem würde dieser Wunsch helfen: Readers and Wikipedians / de: Leser und Wikipedianern
- Proposed solution / Lösungsvorschlag: for every Wikipedia article, image, etc a permanent short link is automatically created and is displayed at the end of the article. The link also persists if a rename takes place. (If articles get merged, both permanent links get displayed at the end of the article. Only when an article gets completely deleted, the permanent link also becomes invalid. Examples below: "long and renamable"; "short and permanent".
* https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gesetz_%C3%BCber_das_Verfahren_in_Familiensachen_und_in_den_Angelegenheiten_der_freiwilligen_Gerichtsbarkeit
kurz und permanent ("stabil"):
* https://wo.srt/12!3ABC46x
Beispiel für Wikimedia Commons:
lang und umbenennbar ("instabil"):
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20161111_xl_P1090340-1986-2016-Dokumentation-30-Jahre-SFV-drei-gruendungsmitglieder-zu-besuch-vlnr.-Bernd-Brinkmeier--Gruendungsmitglieder--Klaus-Greven--Wolf-von-Fabeck--Dedo-von-Krosigk--sowie-Alfons-Schulte.jpg
kurz und permanent ("stabil"):
* https://cwo.srt/12$abc45X
(Einen Ansatz muss es im Hintergrund schon geben!? siehe hier (zu meinem Beispiel): https://commons.wikimedia.org/?curid=55175785 Dies wird aber leider nicht automatisch angezeigt.)

Discussion
- This seems like a not-great project for Wikimedia. En.WP already bans shorteners regardless because the only interesting use case for shorteners is to obscure the link of interest. Which is more useful for trolls and vandals than it is for legitimate users. --Izno (talk) 01:27, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- thank you, Izno for your contribution. I have adapted my proposal:
- exactly this danger I see too: deshallb my suggestions:
- * only wiki-internal short-links can be generated
- * The links can only be created manually by "viewers" and "admins"
- * if something changes at the destination, the link has to be re-sighted
- exactly this danger I see too: deshallb my suggestions:
- Or a completely different suggestion:
- for each Wikipedia article / Wikimedia image, etc., a permanent short link is automatically generated, which also remains when renamed. (see above)
--Molgreen (talk) 04:54, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Stable URLs for Wikipedia articles already exist, via Wikidata: d:Special:GoToLinkedPage/dewiki/Q1518967 is a permanent link to the dewiki article about that item, no matter what it is renamed to. Stable URLs for Commons files should similarly be possible through Structured Commons soon.
- In Wikidata, we want a URL shortener for completely different reasons: the most important one, as far as I’m aware, is that URLs to queries on the Wikidata Query Service are a pain to share because they’re so long and contain special characters, so a URL shortener would be very useful to be able to share queries more easily. (In fact, a URL shortener is already integrated into the Query Service UI, but since it’s not a Wikimedia-specific one, it’s blocked on all wikis, making it less useful.) See phabricator:T44085 and the (many) related tasks for some discussion on this. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 13:39, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Only if the article remains connected to that specific item--of course, not a guarantee. --Izno (talk) 16:27, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- A one-to-one relationship and a guarantee would be important to me --Molgreen 16:59, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

- Thank you for the feedback.
Then I really hope that the stable URLs will be easy(!) to find in Wikipedia articles and commons files in the future.
- Question: should I withdraw the proposal better?
--Molgreen 14:19, 10 November 2018 (UTC) Molgreen There is another proposal in the survey - Create URL Shortener extension for Wikimedia wikis that is very similar to what you are asking for, I think. Does that sound correct? I will archive your proposal in favor of the other one but please let me know if that is not correct. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 22:52, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hi NKohli (WMF), yes I agree
- another question: should the following links have the same destination?
- if so, I would adapt that here:
- because the following page is empty ("More comments: Requests for comment/URL shortener service for Wikimedia"):
--Molgreen 19:27, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Molgreen: You seem correct. The https://foundation.wikimedia.org website is outside our work area and it is discouraged to use that wiki. I think the proposer mistakenly added that link. I will ask them to fix it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 20:02, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
