Wikimedia Commons: Improvements for uploading files on the mobile website

  • Problem: I contribute all my images through the web interface of a smartphone. It is so incredibly tedious! See solutions for exact problems.
  • Who would benefit: Everybody who contributes files via the mobile website
  • Proposed solution: Per tab/step of upload:
    • Upload: Images are only cached when you upload them. When you take to long to add descriptions you can start all over again.
SOLUTION: Server side cache that allows you to save edit steps
    • Choose a licence: I can say it's my own work or not. When I say it's my work and select a license I would have to edit the author name for each file. When I choose the other option the entered values are not saved between sessions.
SOLUTION: Save values in between sessions or add the option for a template.
    • Description: A proposal for descriptions is located here. There is no easy way to fix the EXIF for all uploaded files (Example: The sh***y iPhone I have to use at work one was off by 6 days (yes, days) and 52 minutes. The EXIF is still wrong, but I am not able to manipulate every date at once)
SOLUTION: An option that changes the timestamp of every image for a certain value (eg. 6 days, 0 hours and 52 minutes)
    • Wikidata Item: You have to search for the category and then for the Wikidata Item.
SOLUTION: Suggest Wikidata Items based on the used categories. You have a tickbox to include them but you are able to search for more. If the file has GPS info, Wikidata items nearby could be suggested.

  • @Hangman'sDeath: Thanks for your proposal. At it stands, there are too many different proposals in one; would you be able to narrow it down to just one? There are a few things that I can think of that also might help in the workflow you talk about above: firstly, (if you're an Android user) have you tried the Commons app? It makes uploading from mobile very easy (but unfortunately isn't available for iOS). For the UploadWizard (which I'm assuming you're referring to above), note that you can set a default Author name (or template) and license via your preferences, and it'd not be useful to save other values as they change between uploads and should be confirmed in each new upload session. Batch-fixing incorrect times of photos sounds like it'd be a great proposal; maybe this could focus on that? Or as you say, having a stronger connection between the categories chosen on the Describe page and the Depicts statements on the following page would be great (or it could even work the other way around); that'd also be a good proposal on its own. Adding Depicts statements based on coordinates sounds like a brilliant idea too, and it could also be usefully done outside of the upload process. Anyway, sorry to write so much! It'd just be good to rework this to something smaller, so it can be voted on next week. What do you think? What is the most important part of this, to you?
