ESEAP Conference 2022/Submissions/The Record: Australian Music On Wikipedia

The Record: Australian Music On Wikipedia

edit

Abstract/description

edit

Australian music isn't well represented on Wikipedia. In 2020 I began 'The Record: Australian Music On Wikipedia', a partnership with Australia Council for the Arts which held four editathon events and brought attention to the problems facing new Australian music articles on Wikipedia. In Australia, sources are hard to find due to limited media coverage, a lack of digitisation post-1956, and experts and the public are discouraged to add to Wikipedia due to an unfamiliarity with Wiki rules. The Record project created over 50 new pages, and funded new publications, but has also highlighted issues around diverse content and representation. In this session I will discuss the challenges and how partnerships and residencies can open doors to better lasting content.

Relationship to ESEAP or to the theme

edit

The Record project allowed the Australian music community to reconnect after a series of extended lockdowns meant people stayed home. While I will focus on Australian content, the lack of local representation on English Wikipedia (and struggles to have things not removed) will be relevant.

Session outcomes

  • At the end of the session, participants would learn about how we ran The Record project, the complications of how we funded new content for our partners, and why partnerships ultimately allowed for better citations to be found.
