ESEAP Conference 2024/Report/Ardzun
ESEAP Conference 2024 is the first regional conference agenda that I attended. As a Wikimedian who speaks in Minangkabau and Indonesian, and also active as a contributor on Wikipedia and Wiktionary, as well as the Jakarta Wikimedia Community, this activity provides many activity ideas for my community.
Things learned at the conference
edit- Conservation of trivia: There are many activities that can be carried out in a Wikimedia project, even activities that focus on preserving things that are considered trivial but have an element of knowledge. As I learned during Indonesian Vulgarities in Wiktionary
- Grants: WMF through the Regional Grant Committee provides funding for various activities in the ESEAP region. However, the large number of applicants makes the committee more selective, so creativity, urgency and collaboration in planning programs need to be considered in applications. Apart from that, this makes me want to collaborate and learn further with other communities in the ESEAP region outside Indonesia.
- Tools: There are many tools provided by Wikimedia, so after the conference I need to learn further to support performance when contributing or carrying out duties as a sysop and project manager.
- Copyright laws: So far, I was still confused about what Freedom of Panorama was, but when I attended the conference I understood this and learned more about how to overcome this issue.
Things the participant contributed or participated in the conference
edit- As Organizer:
- The committee asked for help as a medical team to help overcome participants' medical problems
- As Host:
- The first time I hosted in English, I hosted the Equity session.
- As Speaker:
- Speaker at Harmonizing Voices with WikiTutur: Wiktionary and Lingua Libre Collaboration for Language Preservation session together with Diahasy. We explained about our program running in Indonesia and trained the participants to contribute on Wiktionary. The participants were active to discussed about our program and also active to practice on how to contribute on Wiktionary. Unfortunately, we couldn’t demonstrated to contribute by using Lingua Libre because it was crashing.

Plans after the conference (from what was learned or contributed in the conference)
edit- Introducing regional level collaboration to my local community. There are many programs from the others that can be applied by my community.
- The obstacles in the WikiTutur workshop that I carried out made me want to be more proactive in looking for new alternatives and maintain the issue.
- Improving my program and making new innovations in language preservation
- Routinely participate in online or offline activities within the regional scope
- Learn more about tools that can be used in my activities as a sysop on Minangkabau Wikipedia and Wiktionary
Comments/suggestions about the conference
edit- As the first timer on holding a conference, Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia, the preparations were quiet good. You need to study further with other user groups or other affiliates who have experience holding conferences in dealing with and preparing technical matters.
- The committee needs to be stricter regarding time allocation.
- It is interesting that this conference facilitates the agenda for getting to know the history and culture of the host (Sabah, Malaysia).
