Ecomuseo delle Grigne

Ecomuseo delle Grigne is an Ecomuseum established in 2008 and focusing on the relationship between man and the mountain. The Ecomuseum is owned by the Municipality of Esino Lario and it is managed by the association the Associazione Amici del Museo delle Grigne; it was the leading institution organising Wikimania Esino Lario.

An ecomuseum is a museum focused on the identity and heritage of a place, based on institutional and individual participation and aiming to enhance the welfare and development of local communities.

The Ecomuseo delle Grigne

  • contributes to valorize, interpret, document and communicate the material and immaterial heritage of its territory, including the collections of its local cultural institutions and associations
  • involves a network of institutions and local companies, among which
    • Museo delle Grigne, a museum based in Esino Lario, Province of Lecco, Italy. The museum has been using open licences and tools since 2006 and it has collections of archaeology, fossils and anthropology. The museum is owned by the Municipality of Esino Lario and it is managed by the volunteers of the non profit association Associazione Amici del Museo delle Grigne.
    • Archive Pietro Pensa - an historical archive protected by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage specialized in local history and with 170 parchments (within the archive also part of the collection of Serbelloni Sfondrati Family, today Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre.
    • Civic library of Esino Lario
    • the local associations
  • stores its documentation in the ecomuseum documentation and information centre
  • organises initiatives which involve its community and network
  • creates itineraries to facilitate access to heriage
  • focuses on the territory of Esino Lario and it has its headquarter in Villa Clotilde and a specific presentation of its theme and approach in the first floor of the Museo delle Grigne
  • is promoted and managed by the Associazione Amici del Museo delle Grigne, the non profit association of volunteers managing the Museo delle Grigne and the Ecomuseo delle Grigne
  • its communities including its network of local associations and companies


Case study

The Ecomuseo delle Grigne is a case study of the project Empowering Italian GLAMs. It is an institution located in a small mountain village, it is public (civic), it is managed only by volunteers and it involves institutions and networks which have been opening their content and collections since 2006 under the CC BY-SA licence.
