Educational Projects 2023-1 in Mexico

We start with the importance of involving students in their educational processes, but also, inviting them to learn about the benefits of contributing to knowledge from their areas of study.

Summary: During the 2023-1 school year in Mexico, from the Wikimedia Mexico Education Program, we accompanied eight educational projects of high school and degree in alliance with different institutions.

One of the educational projects that we developed, which was longer than the rest, was carried out in conjunction with the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Querétaro and was called Public Assets Management on Wikipedia and consisted not only the students learned to edit the most consulted free encyclopedia in the world and other projects of the foundation, but also organized an Editathon, this allowed them to test all the knowledge that, for four months, we were sharing with them.

Another educational alliance on which we worked was with the Escuela Nacional de Lenguas, Lingüística y Traducción de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. We coordinated three projects in the subjects of Translation of Texts of Social Sciences and Humanities C-A and Translation Studies, where the students, in addition to learning how to edit Wikipedia, learned about the translation tool. This not only allowed them to carry out a school project but also allowed them to have a realistic approach to the processes of editing.

In conjunction with the Universidad Autónoma Popular del Estado de Puebla, we generated three educational projects, in the degrees of International Relations, Business Intelligence and Architecture, where students learned to edit Wikipedia and create and edit relevant articles for their training. Finally, with the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Guadalajara, at the high school level on the subject of Interdisciplinary Music Appreciation, the students created, edited, and translated articles by musicians, after the workshop sessions.

The development of these educational projects leaves us with a feeling of satisfaction since we are committed to breaking the idea that only people with academic degrees have the capacity to produce knowledge, and these projects show us that accompanying and creating knowledge can be built freely and collectively by the community. Furthermore, the joy of the students in seeing their editions published and knowing that someone else will read what they have created is unmatched. On the other hand, we believe that it is a way of being aware and responsible not only with the content and knowledge that we consume but also with that which we produce.
