Educational program & Wikivoyage in Ukrainian University
Summary: Ukrainian universities have been joining the Wikipedia Education Program for years, and one of this semester’s highlights is the work of tourism studies students at the Lviv Polytechnic. Tourism juniors learned how to edit Wikivoyage as a course assignment – and helped this Ukrainian wikiproject to reach 1000 articles.
Lviv Polytechnic is the largest scientific university in Lviv, a big city in the West of Ukraine. This spring, 17 first-year tourism students tried their hand at editing Wikivoyage during their studies.
Thanks to training and mentorship from the Ukrainian Wikipedia volunteer Angriy Hrytsenko who is a professor himself, as well as the involvement of the course's professor's assistant Maryana Senkiv the students created or significantly improved almost 45 articles about world countries and 25 articles on Ukrainian cities, students also uploaded elements to Wikicommons to use it in their articles. This experience was the first for most students, and we hope they will continue volunteering in Ukrainian wikiprojects.
In the last semester, we worked on a similar assignment with Maryana Senkiv and 15 third-year tourism students. Due to that success, we have lasting cooperation for the Education program, and had helped Ukrainian Wikivoyage to reach its first 1000 articles!
We are preparing a more detailed analysis of the course results and hope to share it soon. Wikimedia Ukraine's team is also working on systematizing the experience of various schools and universities using Wikimedia projects for educational purposes to prepare a go-to portal for educators in the Ukrainian-language Wikipedia edition.
