Welcome you all to the Europeana 1989 Online Wikipedia Challenge.

In this challenge all of the participants were invited to improve Wikipedia articles related to the European Revolutions of 1989 in their own language. We selected a short list of topics that may be improved or translated. Points were given for the expansion, translation or creation of one of the articles in the topics list, also for the addition of images to the articles. The points were summarized and the international winner received an special related price.

While improving, they were encouraged to use the many fantastic pictures from 1989 that have been submitted to Europeana's 1989 portal and if not yet done, upload them to our Wikimedia Commons category. These images are memorabilia from European citizens and have been compiled online and during some roadshows. They can be used in as many articles as in many language versions as possible in order to share our common history in a neutral way (you can participate on any language version of Wikipedia that you prefer). For that we required your help! As we strive for the images to illustrate well written and comprehensive articles.

How it works

edit

The challenge was based on a point system, with the goal for each participant to gain as many points as possible. You get points for editing related Wikipedia articles in any language and for adding them into articles (neutrally):

  • 8 points - Create/translate/expand one of the listed articles with at least 300 words of text
  • 3 points - Create/translate/expand one of the listed articles with at least 100 words of text
  • 1 point - Add an commons:Category:Europeana picture to an article (each different language version that you add the picture to counts).

And to avoid any confusion: if you for example write an article consisting of 180 words you still get 3 points as you have not reached the second level of 300 words.
