Summary

Description

(1) H2O2(aq) + I(aq) = H2O(l,g) + IO(aq); и
(2) H2O2(aq) + IO(aq) = H2O(l,g) + O2(g) + I(aq).

English: Experiment known as 'elephant toothpaste'. Hydrogen peroxide solution and liquid detergent are carefully mixed in a beaker and transferred to a large cylinder. A saturated solution of potassium iodide (KI) is added to the cylinder. At the very contact of the solutions, a large amount of steaming foam (exothermic reaction) is formed resembling a giant toothpaste ('elephant toothpaste'). The overall equation for this reaction is:
2H2O2(aq) = 2H2O(l) + O2(g).

Oxygen gas leaves the system, causing strong foaming of the liquid detergent. Iodide ions are used as a catalyst.

(1) H2O2(aq) + I(aq) = H2O(l,g) + IO(aq); and
(2) H2O2(aq) + IO(aq) = H2O(l,g) + O2(g) + I(aq).
Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
