- A small piece of marble is heated to red hot on a Bunsen burner. When added to water containing few drops of phenolphthalein indicator, the liquid turns raspberry red – a proof that the reaction is basic. Unheated piece of marble does not give such a reaction. The marble was pyrolysed, and the CaO product gives basic reaction with water.
