Summary

Description
English: Light bulb in liquid nitrogen

- The light bulb consists of filament hermetically enclosed in a glass vessel filled with inert gas. When an electrical current passes through the filament made out of thin tungsten wire, the metal heats up to red-hot and emits light. During this, the temperature of the filament becomes very high and if there is oxygen present, the filament will burn out. If the glass cover is carefully removed and the filament is immersed in liquid nitrogen, the light bulb continues to shine light. In this case, the liquid nitrogen acts as protective (inert) medium and does not allow the tungsten to burn. If the filament is removed out of the liquid nitrogen, it burns out.
