- 30 mL of 20 % hydrogen peroxide and 20 mL of ethanol are added to the evaporating dish and the mixture is ignited with a safety lighter. At the beginning, a light blue, almost invisible, flame is noticed due to the burning of ethanol. After the addition of potassium permanganate (about 0.5 g), the reaction is immediately accelerated, and a higher flame and pops or bangs are observed. Permanganate ions react with hydrogen peroxide to release oxygen.
