Jahrhunderts bezeichnet. Er ist ein Zeitgenosse von Anthonis Mor und Ambrosius Benson und war wie diese in Antwerpen tätig. Er schuf Darstellungen wohlhabender Bürger, in denen sich das wachsende Selbstbewusstsein und der zunehmende Wohlstand weltlicher Stadtbewohner am Ausgang des Spätmittelalters und Übergang zur Neuzeit erkennen lassen. Zugeschrieben werden dem Meister von 1540 an die dreißig Porträts, die früher fälschlicherweise Pieter Pourbus zugeschrieben wurden. Friedländer, der als erster die stilistische Eigenständigkeit des Meisters erkannt hatte, leitete aus dem Entstehungszeitraum der Werke den Notnamen ab (siehe M. Friedländer, Die Sammlung Richard von Kaufmann, Berlin 1917, Bd. II, Nr. 100). Der Forschung ist es nicht gelungen den Meister namenlich zu identifizieren, Friedländer wies eine Identifizierung mit Nicholas Neufchatel zurück. In der achtsamen Malweise, dem engen Bildausschnitt seiner Porträts sowie in den wiederkehrenden anatomischen Merkmalen langer Finger und ovaler Fingernägel zeigt sich die Selbständigkeit des Künstlers. Die in der Infrarot-Aufnahme erkennbare Unterzeichnung beweist das technische Können des Künstlers (siehe Abb. 1). Seine Bildnisse stellen zumeist Halbfiguren vor einfarbigem Hintergrund dar, von dem sich das helle Inkarnat und die dunkle Kleidung klar absetzen. Angedeutete Plastizität im Bereich der Gewandung bleibt auf die Ärmel beschränkt und dezente Symbole charakterisieren die Porträtierten, wie die Brille, die den Dargestellten als gelehrte Persönlichkeit ausweist. Die pelzbesetzte Kleidung lässt auf einen gewissen Wohlstand des Dargestellten schließen. Vergleichbare Bildnisse des Meisters befinden sich heute im Norwegischen Nationalmuseum in Oslo (siehe Abb. 2) sowie im königlichen Museum für Schöne Künste in Antwerpen.
