GLAMTLV2018/Submissions/Beyond Money: The Wikimedia Role of Grant-Makers

The role of grant-makers goes beyond money. Grant-makers (foundations, public administrations, agencies...) influence the entire cultural and non profit sector through their power-dynamics, action-driven communication tools (based on guidelines and application forms), keywords, approaches, networks and programs. This presentation wants to trigger the involvement of grant-makers in contributing to the Wikimedia projects, because they are key stakeholders with the capacity of innescate a domino effect among thousands of GLAMs.

Abstract

The presentation does not follow up on the presentation planned at Wikimania 2018 related to the creation of a Manifesto for foundations/grant-makers (- the proposal was rejected with the explication that Achal Prabhala and Iolanda Pensa were unlikely to implement it because too difficult).

What will attendees take away from this session?

With this presentation I aim at convincing Wikimedia chapters and active WikiGLAM contributors to focus on grant-makers as key stakeholders in WikiGLAM projects. More specifically the presentation aims at highlights

  1. Why grant-makers are key stakeholders of WikiGLAM projects.
  2. How grant-makers can produce a determinant impact on the Wikimedia projects (and why they should be interested).
  3. Which grant-makers are already involved in contributing to the Wikimedia projects.
