Abstract

After conducting Wiki Loves Monuments photo competition for a few years, there is now more than 200 000 images of cultural monuments in Ukraine in different cities, towns and villages. It is still not enough - out of more than 80 000 of monuments we have pictures of more than 30 000 objects, but it is still a lot... And it can be used. Though, can it?.. Zabolotnoho State Scientific Architecture and Construction Library in Kyiv has been working on a 25-volume bibliographic index about towns of Ukraine since 2008. In 2016 they had an idea to use the freely licensed pictures from Wikimedia Commons to illustrate the publication. And they realised that they cannot just do it, they need somebody to explain how they can find pictures from a specific town, how they need to mention the author... and even how to create a short link to ID of the page (as the file names are usually in Cyrillic, so the link is impossibly long if you have to mention it as it is in a printed book). This cooperation between the library and Wikimedia Ukraine has been going on for almost a year. In the end: 963 pictures from the photo contest Wikimedia Ukraine has been doing for 6 years now are illustrating the bibliographic index. GLAMs need us. We need them. How can we make sure we are welcoming?

What will attendees take away from this session?
  1. Ideas of how important it is for us to think about us and the work we are doing from the GLAMs perspective
  2. How we can make sure we give the content people can use even if they are not Wikipedians
  3. Sharing experience on how to make GLAMs feel welcomed
