This is an informal Wikimedia group made of Ghanaian Educators, both teaching and non-teaching staff at the pretertiary levels.
Through active participation in Wikimedia projects, educators can leverage their unique advantage of having direct access to engage in advocacy activities that promote the adoption of Wikimedia resources as supplementary teaching and learning materials, particularly in addressing the frequent shortages of such resources in Ghanaian schools.
Our community’s diversity, in terms of language and ethnicity, will allow us to contribute across multiple Wikimedia platforms, including various language Wikipedias. Through capacity-building workshops, editathons, and meetups, all members will be empowered with the necessary skills to contribute meaningfully to their respective language Wikipedias and other Wikimedia initiatives.
Our Goal
To establish Wikipedia as a central hub of teaching and learning resources in Ghanaian schools, resulting in the integration of Wikimedia into the national education curriculum.
Objectives
To achieve this goal, we aim to:
1. Recruit and train a network of volunteer educators as Wikimedians who will cascade their knowledge to other educators, creating widespread awareness and participation in Wikimedia projects across Ghana.
2. Promote awareness of Wikimedia projects in local Ghanaian languages and globally.
3. Foster collaboration with Wikimedia groups worldwide, engaging in projects such as Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wiktionary.
4. Equip volunteer editors with the skills and resources needed for the sustained development and improvement of Wikimedia projects.
Planned Activities
To meet our objectives, the following activities will be undertaken:
1. Community Meetups
Regular meetups will be organized for idea-sharing and provide support to members as they continue contributing to Wikimedia projects.
2. Editathons
These hands-on workshops will train new editors on creating, translating, and improving content across Wikimedia projects. They will also focus on developing specific topics to enhance the quality of Wikimedia resources.
3. Editing Contests
Contests will be held to motivate experienced editors to sustain their contributions and encourage non-members to join the movement.
4. Photo Documentation and Contests
To enrich Wikimedia Commons, members will be encouraged to take, upload, and document high-quality images and media files that can be utilized globally across Wikimedia projects.
5. Research and Documentation
As educators, research is integral to our work. We will collaborate on projects that uncover and document facts for integration into Wikimedia platforms like Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wiktionary.
