Global Reach/Egypt survey
Do you use the internet
editOur respondents who used the internet
Top reasons for using the internet
editNon-internet users: Why aren't you using it?
editA new survey question. Many of those who aren't using the internet yet are either concerned about the cost, or don't see what value it has for them.
Awareness of Wikipedia
editIn Egypt, awareness of Wikipedia is lower than any other country we surveyed.
How they learned about Wikipedia
editOf the respondents who had heard of Wikipedia, we asked how they had found out about it. The internet is the primary way people in Egypt learn about Wikipedia.
Reasons for using Wikipedia
editFrequency of use
editThe results of this question are used further in the survey to ask additional questions of the infrequent or non-users and learn more about their perspectives. This also provides more detail around the overall awareness issue - showing how many use it vs those who don't.
How interested were the infrequent / non-users
editFor the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, we asked about their interest in Wikipedia. We wanted to see if people who didn't use it just didn't care, or wanted to but experienced some barrier.
For those users with some interest, what was the biggest barrier
editFor the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, and also said they had some level of interest in Wikipedia, we asked them what they felt the largest barrier was.
For those users with no interest, what would make them more likely to use Wikipedia
editFor the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, and also said they had no interest in Wikipedia, we asked them what changes would make them more likely to use Wikipedia
Smartphones vs Feature phones
editTo avoid differences of interpretation of what exactly a smartphone is, we instead focused on whether their mobile phone could possibly access the internet. This is the key differentiator between feature phones and smart phones, as well as identifying who might be able to access Wikipedia on the internet. Egypt has a particularly low level of smartphones.
Mobile phone Internet access method
editWifi and Cellular use is mixed with no dominant method appearing.
Mobile Network speed
edit85% people in Egypt have 3G or lower.
App usage
editWe were interested in how much smartphone users here actively downloaded and used Apps.
Gender
editThe representation of female respondents is more than we've seen in Nigeria, Ghana, and India, but less than Mexico and Brazil.
Age
editLocation
editThe respondents categorized themselves as either Urban or Rural.
Region of Egypt
editFor the Egypt survey, we asked what Geographical Zone they lived in.
