Grants:PEG/Yvonne Oluoch/Edit-a-thon campaign for Kenyan influential women
Goal
editThe goal of this project is to create a community of women editors in Kenya. So far, there is no Kenyan woman actively contributing Kenyan women research in Wikipedia. So why is wikipedia the platform of choice? Wikipedia is a highly reputable website mainly because of the quality of documentation it contains.Unfortunately, most influential women in Kenya feature more on gutter press than on Wikipedia. It is therefore the best platform to use for promoting visibility of influential women in Kenya. This will then have a ripple effect on the young women editors to learn more the different areas of society in which they can contribute and make positive change.
Plan
editOur plan is simple, mobilize college students who are interested in research and learning how to contribute to Kenyan women wikipedia content. Train them on how to make wikipedia entries and then organize multiple editathons campaigns in their campuses for capacity building and growth of the community. Offer them mentorship so as to keep the campus wikipedia editathon growing. Some of the women we wish to document include, women who have done notable works in politics, technology and fashion, just but a few NOTE: This is just a sample and we would like to get public’s opinion further contribution during the outreach workshop at Africa Women in Tech Conference on the 14th November 2015

Activities
editWe intend to start small and have a huge impact which will strengthen our foundation, as we say, less is more. Our first outreach will be conducted at the African Women Tech Conference in Nairobi on 14th November 2015. This is a women tech community that I am a part of and it will be a good avenue to meet with female students who are interested to learn and contribute to wikipedia. A 2 hour workshop breakout session will ignite their curiosity and we plan to create a women in tech Kenya wikipedia page.
Subsequent trainings and editathon is to follow from February to April (Universities close in december for holidays and in january, students take time to settle down from holidays). We will work with 3 colleges in Nairobi i.e KCA University, Strathmore and Kenyatta. In each college we intend to host a total of 3 workshop trainings. 3 Saturdays in February in each college, same in March then in April, we will mix it up to be more interesting and attract more students. Within the 3 saturdays in April, one campus becomes a host of the other two and we alternate it within the 3 Saturdays. This will make a strong closing on the editathon campaign.
Broad Activity | Objective | Indicator of success | |
---|---|---|---|
Nov 2015 Outreach program at AWTC | Spread the news and get people psyched up about the subsequent trainings | Number of people who will sign up between 10-20 will be good | |
Feb 2016 Campus editathons 30-40 participants in total(target) | Train students ways to contribute to wikipedia | 110 new entries | |
Mar 2016 Campus editathons | More wikipedia entries | 160 new entries including edits | |
Apr 2016 Campus editathons | More entries | Successful 180 new entries | Based on the target number of 30 and the average number of entries within 3 months is 150, then all the 30 editors will automatically become active editors by making 5 edits per month. |
- Community Engagement
We intend to use our breakout session at the AWTC to engage as many women as possible since this women in tech kenya community brings together influential women across all sectors and not only in technology.During the 2 hour outreach session, we will use it to get more public opinion from the community on other influential women they believe should be documented on wikipedia, besides the ones that we have on our list.
- Sustainability
Our sustainability strategy is to create a mailing list that will actively engage the editors remotely. Also, each campus is to have a wikipedia champion (someone who coordinates local campus wikipedia participants) who will also actively engage new participants who join the community. This will help grow the number of Kenya women wikipedia editors and increase Kenyan women content in wikipedia. Our local campus champions and other active member will also engage in mentor-mentee program to help new members settle in and contribute.

Impact
editOur impact is to have a solid women wikipedia chapter in Kenya that promotes women visibility and helps reduce the gender gap in wikipedia. More awareness of the public especially college students that they can contribute to wikipedia content and not just be consumers and downloaders of internet content. Additional package that comes with community and awareness is: Improved research, documentation and quality editing skills within the community.
Target readership
editWikipedia digital gender gap, getting more Kenyan influential women represented and women leading the contribution. Version: Wikipedia English. Why? Because English attracts more readership traffic as compared to Kiswahili.
Fit with strategy
editWhat crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.
Measures of success
editOur measures of success depends on our strategic goals i.e: Grow a community by increasing reach to new contributors. This will take place as the activity flow above i.e we start off by hosting a workshop at the African Women In Tech Conference AWTC,which will take place at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi on the 14th November 2015. Details http://akirachix.com/announcing-the-2nd-annual-african-women-in-technology-conference-hosted-by-akirachix/. This conference has the perfect target audience from high school and college students and professionals. Not only from tech but across all fields. The beauty is that this conference will bring together influencial women in one place and potential contributors also. This conference will lead up to subsequent trainings in 3 campuses within a 3 month period as we build on a mentorship program through remote participation. With increased reach, comes increased participation to contribute which will in turn lead to increased readership from a trusted source.
Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.
- Qualitative goals criteria includes
Increased contributions Increased skills for editing/contributing Recruitment of new editors/contributors I believe that the above 3 goals stand a high chance of success since college students respect and value wikipedia's work. So having a positive perception towards wikipedia heightens the desire of students to want to be associated with wikipedia in this case female students. One point to note is that most students use wikipedia as their trusted source for any truthful referral, even cheating on exams and lecturers have never disputed wikipedia's content. So all the above qualitative goals stand a high chance to succeed.
- Quantitative metrics
During the African Women In Tech Conference: Our target number of signed up participants either from high school or college students or professionals is 20 atmost. We will create a mailing list from the details that they will leave from signing up and invite them to our subsequent campus trainings where we are targeting 10 college students with (+5 allowance will be available) 3 campuses, 10 students each, a total of 30 new contributors/ editors (+10-15 allowance) 2nd month target is to attract new users who did not make it to the 1st month and the 3rd month target is to retain the contributors and encourage them to continue editing through remote participation, mentor-mentee program.

Unfortunately, we do not have any evidence for past wikipedia contribution online and we hope this will be our first successful online contribution to wikipedia. A step into the right direction from offline mobilization and outreach. I attended a gender ad tech conference in Berlin last year in December and that is where I got to learn of wiki gender gap in a workshop session on women representation on wikipedia. From there, I always bring up the discussion of bridging wiki gender gap to create awareness and contribution of more women especially global south, Kenya to be specific.
Risks
editNot specifically a risk but rather a need.Since we want to host 3 editathons per months in 3 months i.e 9 in total. Getting a volunteer contributor especially for the 1st month might be a challenge given that there is no compensation in offering trainings. Local Kenyan context while conducting workshop trainings is that most facilitators will want a small compensation. Local training context.
Budget
editPlease provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines.
Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.
Item Description | Unit | Number of Units | Unit Cost | Total Cost | Notes | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pull up banners | 1 | 4 | 180 | 720 | One banner for the AWTC outreach workshop, 3 banners for each college campus to attract participants during the 3 month engagement | |
Branded T-Shirts | 1 | 20 | 10 | 200 | We will have a stand at the event and during tea breaks and lunch, there will be trivia wikipedia questions for participants to "win "a t-shirt.The trivia will be asking the participants questions on which notable kenyan women are not reflecting in wikipedia and what notable works have they done with evidence. This will encourage participants to refer to wikipedia for evidence and also help us find out more women to document. The t-shirts will be for AWTC Outreach | |
Food and beverages (mostly snacks) | 1 | 9 | 250 | 2,250 | During the 3 month editathon campaign, we will conduct 9 editathon workshops, 3 at each campus | |
Transportation | 1 | 30*6 | 250 | 450 | During the last month of the editathon, we would like the participants to get to know other community members instead of contributing independently as campuses. This will strenghten the community and even strenghten the remote mentorship process. So we would like to organize transportation from one campus to another for networking between the participants. This will save time if we can all arrive at the designated campus of choice instead of having the participants going individually. So we will hire local transportation to the campus of the day.To and fro transportation to their respective campuses | |
Misceleneous (in terms of bank fees and inflation rate | 1 | 1 | 362 | We are estimating miscellaneous to cost at most 10% of the total items cost i.e 3620. Foreign currency bank charges usually cost 10 dollars per transaction in most banks.Any extra costs within miscellaneous will be clearly accounted for | ||

During the outreach workshop, Akirachix, the hosting organization http://akirachix.com/ are generous enough to offer us venue and meals for the day free of charge. Also, the college campus administration are offering their libraries and campus venue for free so no charges for that. We all stay in Nairobi so commuting from the campuses will either be using our private cars or public transportation (personal preference of individual organizer).
Non-financial requirements

We would appreciate if we can use wikipedia logo in branding our trivia contest t-shirts and the banners. We want the t-shirts to look very nice that the audience will want to engage.Besides that we have a very charimstic lady to lead the contest.Like we know, small gestures go a long way and a won t-shirt has greater value than a free t-shirt. Also, given that the project is of a 3 month duration and we mentioned it above as a need rather than a risk. Can we get contact help with Kenya local wikipedia editors to train our contributors within the first month in each campus. We have one on board but we would appreciate if we can get connected with others so that they are part of this phenomenal project.
