summary:

A regular series of workshops with the Women in Science and Math at LUC, focusing on women scientist biographies.

2013 round 2

Project idea

edit

I have seen some parts of Wikipedia summed up as "men writing about men", and this is borne out by the serious gender gap and the systemic bias against biographies of women (and other topics related to women). I have partnered with the Women in Science and Math group at Loyola University Chicago where I am a student to host a series of workshops to teach women students of science and mathematics how to edit Wikipedia and provide a regular space for them to contribute to biographies of women and women's topics, with the added bonus of free food.

Project goals

edit

This project will focus on recruiting new women editors (the club is all-female), reducing Wikipedia's systemic bias against women (by teaching these young women to write biographies of women, mostly scientists), and retaining these women editors (by hosting monthly workshops, giving busy women a dedicated time and place to edit).

Target audience

edit

College-aged women will be brought into the project and involved in the efforts to reduce systemic bias.

Fit with strategy

edit

Increasing Participation (more women) and Improving Quality (more/better content about women)

Sustainability

edit

I hope that a series of editing workshops can be held each academic year at LUC, and that different scopes will be explored and different groups of people involved.

Measures of success

edit
  1. Consistent participation of women in these workshops
  2. Quality content being created (biographies of women)
  3. Content taken through processes like DYK, GAN, and FAC

Participant(s)

edit
  1. Keilana - I'm an undergraduate molecular biology student at Loyola. I have experience running editing workshops for the scientific community and extensive experience writing about women scientists on English Wikipedia.
