This Individual Engagement Grant is renewed

This project is requesting a 6-month renewal of the grant, to continue work in the areas described below.
Scope
editThis renewal is designed to dramatically scale the project and disseminate its learnings to Wikimedians worldwide.
- Overall goal: Seed more programs, specifically 15 active workshop series besides Loyola. At least 2 should be outside the US.
- Create a series of vlog-style videos (the video equivalent of learning patterns) explaining each element of the kit, specifically for people who cannot or do not wish to attend a facilitator training workshop.
- Work to translate the kit into other languages.
- Seed more programs in the US and around the world with community partners.
- Partner with and track participation from chapters and other groups using this model for their workshops.
- Run at least two facilitator training workshops to create connections between future facilitators of this model and teach them the "soft skills" that are nearly impossible to transfer with writing.
Budget
edit- Travel - $1000 for 2 trips to DC ($500 a flight), $2500 for 1 international (destination tbd based on community consultations).
- Video - $500 to hire a film student to film, edit, and upload the videos.
- Project management - $15/hour x 20 hrs/wk - $7000
- Time creating the videos, which I estimate from beginning to end will take 6-8 weeks. This includes finding and working with a local film student, writing scripts for the full series of videos (which will cover everything in the kit), and actually filming the videos. This will be interleaved with other work. (35%)
- Improving the curriculum for workshop facilitator training, which will be conducted at least twice with WMDC's help. There was a lot of feedback from the first round of training, which will be incorporated into the second and third workshops. Also included in this is the weekend-long facilitator training. (30%)
- Contacting and working with groups who wish to share and exchange learnings. (25%)
- Running workshops at LUC and continuing to refine the model of workshops. (10%)
- Workshops at LUC will be covered by previous rollover
Activities
editI will be accomplishing several main activities during the renewal period.
- WMDC has worked extensively to support this program and was the generous host of the first Workshop Facilitator Training. I plan to go to DC again for future iterations of this training.
- After extensive community consultation, I will likely travel to meet with members of whichever community wishes to work together.
- A training session to be conducted at Wikimania and at the annual Wikimedia Chapters Conference.
Rationale
editWe created something great on a small scale by refining the program at Loyola and compiling those learnings. We started to scale with the first facilitator training but now we need more time to keep scaling it, to keep it from fizzling. In order to accomplish this, we need time and financial support.
Measures of success
edit- 15 programs seeded from these events and from the kit, two of which are global
- Successful continuation of the LUC workshops - at least 5 of the 9 editors from the last series return, creation of at least 50 articles, and 10 new editors.
- Production of a video series covering all of the major elements of the kit
- In total, the seeded programs will produce at least 700 articles and have combined attendance of at least 200.
- At least 5 of the seeded programs will be run by women.

- Emily's work has helped Wikimedia DC plan its outreach activities, and I support a renewal of this grant. harej (talk) 21:36, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Emily was a great facilitator. I support a renewal of this grant. user:mimi.roberts
- I participated in the earlier Workshop Facilitator Training and got a lot out of it; I support Emily expanding her work in this area, especially helping it scale beyond in-person facilitator workshops. I believe that the goal of more & better workshops is valuable, and that she has the experience and enthusiasm to continue improving materials for facilitators. - I also participated in a previous Workshop Facilitator Training and found it to be very helpful. I strongly support the international (non-US, non-English) aspects of this proposal. Emily, if you need any help with translation into Hungarian please let me know. -Thibbs (talk) 14:58, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- The Workshop Facilitator Training aspect of this grant was successful the first time around and I believe its continuation and expansion will be useful to many users again in the future. Staticshakedown (talk) 15:46, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- I had the pleasure of participating in Emily's Workshop Facilitator Training back in August. She has designed a powerful product and structured it in a very understandable and effective manner, and has the combination of outgoing personality and maturity to make it happen. I am confident that any funding she receives will be funding well spent. Mendaliv (talk) 18:58, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- Aboslutely! I also participated in the training at the end of August and have already used what I have learned to develop an Adult Education course and to do a presentation to my state's Historical Society on wikipedia. While I strongly support international outreach efforts, I also want to make a plug to reach out to rural North America, both the US and Canada, not only for videoconferencing but to bring people together in person; the networking opportunities are wonderful and the community development that occurs is outstanding.
