Grants:IdeaLab/Block function
Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editThe potential for harassment and abuse in the Wikimedia community.
What is your solution?
editAdd a "blocking" functionality where users can block one another (including IP users) and can include a reason that is displayed to the blocked user when they go to your user page and user talk page. Also, users would not be able to block administrators, bureaucrats, MediaWiki staff, or other users with exclusive rights.
- Clarification: The block function would only keep the blocked user from editing the user talk page of the user who issued the block. A message would be displayed along with it in the header, but the blocked user can still view the user talk page. This block would not apply to article, template, file, or project talk pages.
Project goals
edit- Reduce the potential for abuse and/or harassment in the community.
- Create a safer experience for users.

- This is a basic, standard tool in the fight against harassment online. The social networks have it, YouTube has it - even GitHub has it. It's time Wikimedia projects had this feature too! Greenrd (talk) 22:15, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- Since most of the extreme cases of harassment happens on the user pages. This makes a lot of sense. BallroomBlitzkriegBebop (talk) 15:08, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
- It is a strong tools to prevent vandalism and trolls in the first place. My2ndAngelic (talk) 09:49, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
