Grants:IdeaLab/Decentralization of Wikimedia projects
Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editOvernight, Wikimedia projects could vanish. 404. Caput. Library of Alexandria all over again. This is because we rely on costly centralized servers. However, if we switched to a self-hosted or P2P approach (maybe even both?), the chances of Wiki* going down are very unlikely.
What is your solution?
editSwitching to a P2P or self-hosted approach to infrastructure, rather than relying solely on central servers in one jurisdiction. This would share the burden across all readers and significantly reduce expenses for maintaining Wikiprojects. This structure can also coexist with a central server, perhaps acting as a fallback, in case of downtimes or countrywide blockades.
Project goals
editNot a small goal, I know. Changing the backbone of Wikimedia projects, but for in the long run, this will be the smart decision to be made.
