Project idea

edit

A new Translate tab for articles at Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, and other projects.

Interface

edit
  • New Translate tab

  • Dictionary — a floating box to query phrases in source language and obtain their translations.

  • Translation interface:
    • Language to translate to: [INPUT BOX]
    • Headline in target language: [INPUT BOX]
    • Per-paragraph main translation area with preview for each.
    • Preview all button.

There is a start at wmtran. There are several things to do to bring the idea to completion:

  • Shape it into a gadget with a Translate tab. It would have to talk to two wikis at once.
  • Add ability to load content from a target wiki so the user can save an unfinished translation and can continue at any time by loading two pages in the tool.
  • Add option to do large chunk translate (in one block, not per-paragraph).

Project goals

edit
  • Add translation functionality to all contributors. Currently translation process is entirely manual.
  • Relief from manual look-up of translations of phrases, such as Earth in English is Земля in Russian: you can check that manually by loading the page and moving mouse over the interwiki, but in practice, you only need the interwiki. Similarly for words at Wiktionary.

Integration

edit

VisualEditor users can type content easily. Why not also be able to translate?

Mobile users have a big fat 'Read in another language' button, but not a 'Translate' one. They will be happy to use it!

As already said, this is an existing software project of the WMF Language engineering team. --Nemo 08:54, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Missed this being said before. I expected a WMF team to work on this, and I have left them a comment on their talk page. I appreciate your pointer. Gryllida (talk) 09:44, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
