Project idea

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

edit

Sustaining our friends at Wikimedia Nepal, so they can continue their Wikipedia efforts as Nepal recovers from the earthquake.

What is your solution?

edit

Providing funding for the efforts that WM Nepal indicates are a priority. Possible projects listed below.

Project goals

edit

[This section is a list of some of the possible project goals that WM Nepal might wish to consider. This list is offered to start the discussion as to what sorts of things WM Nepal would like to choose as its priorities.]

  1. An honorarium of US$300 for the family of any deceased WM Nepal member we have lost in the disaster, and for any surviving WM Nepal member who needs medical care.
  2. Funding for a WM Nepal gathering in Kathmandu to map out a path forward for the chapter, also bringing in diaspora Wikimedians active in Nepali Wikipedia, to determine what the Chapter's needs are.
  3. Funding for computers, cell phones, and cameras for existing WM Nepal members who may have lost their equipment in the disaster, and for WM Nepal participants who can take time to document earthquake recovery efforts.
  4. Collaboration with WikiMed for quality review and improvement of basic medical and first aid articles on Nepali Wikipedia.
  5. Scholarships to Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City to keep morale high and exchange experiences. Consider meeting with people involved in Mexico City's earthquake recovery efforts, and documenting some of Mexico City's experience rebuilding on Wikipedia, with interviews, image donations, etc.
  6. Kiwix / Rasberry Pi distribution of offline Wikipedia in earthquake affected areas, especially in places where children may not be returning to school due to a lack of classrooms. Evaluate whether access to offline Wikipedia helps children maintain their enthusiasm for learning when schools are not available. Consult with WM Nepal if additional languages besides Nepali/English would be useful.
  7. Consider creating two or three Education Program positions/partnerships to coordinate collaboration with students on improving coverage of basic encyclopedic topics in Nepali Wikipedia.
  8. Consider creating an Education Program position/partnerships to coordinate collaboration with members of the Tibetan refugee population in Nepal on improving coverage of basic encyclopedic topics in Tibetan Wikipedia.
  9. A series of happy, motivational meetups and editing events-- with lots of good food, to keep spirits high!
