Grants:IdeaLab/Wiki activity in schools

Wiki activity in schools
Wiki editing should be made part of learning in school, be it curricular or extra-curricular. Top schools may engage in translating and localizing English articles into the national/regional language or vice-versa. One practical way could be making translation project where the teacher would assign articles to translate to groups of students within a set time period. It would inculcate thinking skills where students would brainstorm to produce the best translations and help improve ties between languages (yes, languages have diplomatic ties to be maintained). As for rural schools, wherever Internet connection is possible, students may be given assignments to write up or improve Wikipedia articles about their locality.

Audience

edit

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?

edit

Try to be as specific as possible about this group.
students and educators in schools (primary and secondary) and institutions of higher education

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?

edit

Malay, English, Chinese, a bit of Indonesian

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?

edit

This can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
classroom, library, Facebook, WhatsApp

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?

edit

Think about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
It would inculcate their love for languages especially their native one and help take their language out of the shadows of major world languages, improve critical thinking by looking for the best translations whenever translations become tricky, and understanding how different their native tongue and other languages describe the world etc.

Project idea

edit

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?

edit

Malay, English

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?

edit

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?

edit

Think about the steps that might involved to make this idea happen, and what you might teach people about your experience or others' experiences using Wikipedia.
I would encourage them to contribute and not just read. I would ask them to add and improve articles especially those in their native language.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?

edit

If you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
It's going to be an ongoing process.

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?

edit

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
I can only promote this idea in simple language as I am not an educator myself. I just need a learning culture that has a positive attitude towards languages, equally so towards national and international languages. In my country, the national language is not held in high regard by the urban professional class, partly due to politics and maybe unsatisfactory language planning.
