Grants:IdeaLab/Wikimedia Open Learning
I think Wikimedia is made up of communities. If we can help people find communities of interest where they are made to feel welcome, then the project could eventually evolve into a more diverse and positive place to be.
I envision a more interactive learning environment using video podcasts, qualified trainers in a live weekly online chat, whiteboard animations/screencasts... Topics could include: 'Setting up an account;, 'Making your first edit', 'Visual vs Text Editors... what are they?', 'What to do if you feel you're being harassed', 'How to find and join a community inside Wikipedia', 'How to avoid the pitfalls of using images'...Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editPeople don't understand how Wiki works, they come to share knowledge, get their hands slapped for trying and disappear. It weakens the project and limits the range of voices that could be heard here.
What is your solution?
editEngage, incubate and inform new and potential editors/contributors through free, open learning specifically around all things Wiki. This could become the only reliable place to gain such information.

editAbout the idea creator
editI'm a teacher, writer and musician. I've been very timid about contributing on Wikipedia because I'm uncomfortable with the level of confrontation there, but after stumbling on this page, I decided to add my idea.
