Grants:IdeaLab/Women artists are underrepresented.

Women artists are underrepresented.
I'm currently writing a Wikipedia article on American book artist Louise Odes Neaderland, and it is almost ready to submit. I've been adding the names of women artists to various topics related to their media. I have obtained copyright permission from an encaustic artist to upload an image of hers.

Project idea

edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

edit

Documenting with accurate text, references, and images the contributions of women who are notable artists, thereby overcoming their underrepresentation in Wikipedia.

What is your solution?

edit

I will continue to write, edit, and document the work of female artists. One of the first hurdles is demonstrating the notability of the artists. Once I submit an article I work hard to keep it viable.

Goals

Participants

edit
  • I am keen to work on images regarding women. I have already selected and nominated many valued images of women on Commons: Solange Fernex, Maryse Hilsz, George Sand, Eva Nansen, Sarah Bernhardt, Grace Kelly, Sally Ride, Annie Besant, Radha Bhatt, Karima Delli, Uma Bharti, Nathalie Baye, and many actresses from Bollywood and the Belle Epoque. See c:User:Yann/Valued images by others. I'd like to get review and help about this. Regards, Yann (talk) 12:45, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Nothing wrong with this at all. Good luck! Tharthan (talk) 20:03, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Though this is often asserted, I have to say that, though I have been involved with the subject for some time, I've never seen any convincing evidence that "Women artists are underrepresented" on WP. Usually the "evidence" presented is along the lines of: "Here's female artist X, who [brief career summary follows], and doesn't have an article on WP. QED Women artists are underrepresented on Wikipedia". This is no good without a comparison showing that a comparable male artist would have an article. In fact vast numbers of reasonably distinguished artists of both genders don't have articles. Since there has been considerable effort devoted to improving coverage of female artists specifically evidence should be produced rather than mere assertion. In the case of women scientists, such evidence as we have suggests they are now more likely to covered on WP than comparable male ones, thanks to specific efforts at editathons etc. I don't think WMF will support paying directly for editing, which part of this is. Project plan

Activities

edit

I will concentrate on writing articles to submit and images to upload. I will need to update some image software and archive subscriptions, especially to art magazines and newspapers. I would enjoy participating in one of the Wikipedia training sessions.

Budget

edit

Contributing editor: 100.00 USD Contributing writer: 200.00 USD Archival research: 50.00 USD Wikipedia forums: cost unknown Image copyright permission correspondence: 100:00 Uploading of image files to Wikimedia: 100:00

Community engagement

edit

I am located near a top university art program (Virginia Commonwealth University), and a major art museum (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts). I have been the director of several galleries and president of arts organizations. I am acquainted with many artists who would like to be included.

Sustainability

edit

I am not capable of developing software for a project, but I have skills in photography and an M.F.A. in art from Virginia Commonwealth University. I have donated archives to the James Branch Cabell Library there and think that they would be very interested in conducting one of your workshops.

Measures of success

edit

Improve editor and writer activity. Improve retention rate for articles by and about women. Improve submission of acceptable copyrighted images of artists' work.
