Project goal and measures of success

edit

This section should reference the project goals and measures of success described in the approved grant submission. See Grants:PEG/Alhen/Wiki Loves Monuments in Bolivia to review the goals and metrics listed in the approved submission.

Project goal

edit
Provide the project goal here.
Main goal: get people to photograph monuments and share them under a free license on Wikimedia Commons.
Secondary goal: Get cultural and heritage related institutions to work along together to reach people and raise attention over cultural heritage.
Did you achieve your projected.

Cobija: It's the capital of Pando, smallest department in Bolivia. They didn't have a heritage monument list by the time we asked. The municipality agreed to make a list of monuments that are historically and economically important for the region. http://www.pando.gob.bo/monumentos/ The project had a positive influence in the development of awareness of heritage in that region.

Cochabamba: We contacted Patricia Dueri, head of the Architecture Department at San Simon University. She and her group organized bicycle outings to photograph different heritage places around the city. They also helped spread the word about the contest among heritage related institutions. They went on to create a Youtube video to engage new editors and photographers to participate. There was an

La Paz en Fotografía : We got La Paz en Fotografía to help us spread the word about the contest. La Paz in Fotografía is one of the biggest communities in Bolivia that gathers photographers who post daily about the country and its people.

We got people to participate from all departments in Bolivia, and not only the main cities, but also we got some pictures from intermediate cities like Arani, or Calamarca. Cobija is an interesting example because this is city is often left out of national competitions due to its poor Internet connection and lack of road connections during the rainy season. Luis Santander, a volunteer, got the local authorities to cooperate with the contest.

Measures of success

edit
List the measures of success exactly as provided in the approved grant submission, and evaluate your project according to each measure listed there.
  • Number of participants (50+ participants)

156 people participated in Wiki Loves Monuments Bolivia 2013 as it can be seen in the archive.

  • Number of images collected (1000+ files) Internet penetration in Bolivia is the lowest in the region(15%), it will be great if we reach this number.

The contest collect a total of 2381 images of the 9 departments of our country. You can see the images here

  • Inclusion of 5 institutions related to cultural heritage to help spread the word about the contest.
Provide an overall assessment of how your project went according to these measures.
The project itself was well received by a majority of the institutions that got to know about the project. We even got some of them, like the Colegio de Arquitectos de Bolivia, the main institution that gathers architects in Bolivia to request a better representation for next year's contest. The La Paz's City Hall couldn't include us in the project because we started the project after they had already designed their annual budget. This is contest is even mentioned by some of the contestans even years afterwards.
If you were to plan a similar project, would you measure it differently? If yes, please explain how.
We need to take advantage of the work we did to create the lists, so we can complete the pictures for the monuments that didn't get a photograph.

I believe that because of Bolivia's growth we can now expect at least 3000 pictures from different departments, and that we can engage at least 200 individuals to participate in the contests. We, as a working group, have received many requests to make a new version of this contest which we had to decline due to time issues. It's important to note that we may include a milestone that can measure how many pictures were uploaded correctly following the guidelines to participate. Also, we want to see how many of the users uploaded pictures after the contest have finished to see if we got effective user engagement.

We will also look forward for intermediate cities to actively participate in the contests for them to create official heritage lists for their regions.
