Lessons learned

edit
What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects? Consider the following questions and respond with 1 - 2 paragraphs.
What went well?
We had a very well implement exhibition in the Museo Universitario del Chopo during and after the awarding ceremony. This museum is one of the most renowned of Mexican capital in contemporary art and exhibitions, and it was very positive for the Wikimedia movement achieve these spaces with a talent show achieved through Wiki Loves Monuments. In addition, due to the agreement between WM-MX and Museo Universitario del Chopo, was possible insert within program of museum exhibitions (some are internationals and scheduled two years in advance) the WLM competition exhibition. The curatorial work (design and display assembly) was donated by the museum.
Until the date the report, the photos are still exhibited in schools of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (National Polytechnic Institute), the most important institution of technology in the country. The investment made in this exhibition grew to many months more than had been planned and we reach more delegaciones of Mexico City for spread the word of Wikimedia mission.
What did not go well?
Due to internal changes, the exhibition in the Mexico City Metro was not possible. After exposure at UAM Iztapalapa, we received the invitation of the Department of Cultural Diffusion of IPN to display photos in their schools all 2012, with the responsibility of the institute to manage spaces and the installation of the exhibition, and we change the original plan for the planned institutions. This meant to have more exposure in many places in Mexico City and reduce the volunteer time into institutional procedures and transportation costs covered by the volunteers themselves. From January 2013, the IPN was responsible for moving photos from school to school until September 2014 will continue to show in different facilities.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
  • We need to print the next time twice the same pictures or think of a more durable material, because almost a year later, the photos are damaged (more in their corners) and it has been necessary to repair manually two times. Also, is recommended integrate within the cost any packaging to transport safely photos from venue to venue and transportation costs, due to the dimensions of the photos are hard to move into public transport.
  • Make agreements in advance for exhibitions. In the case of Mexico City Metro exhibition, one of the opportunities for reach more people, the officials who had committed to place the exhibition, were removed from their offices by internal changes. This is not under control of the chapter, but can be prevented by creating documents of commitment.

Project goal and measures of success

edit

This section should reference the project goals and measures of success described in the approved grant submission. See Grants:PEG/Iván Martínez/Wiki Loves Monuments México exhibition to review the goals and metrics listed in the approved submission.

Project goal

edit
Provide the project goal here.
  • Publicize the contest winning photos in public spaces.
  • Inspire other mexican photo lovers to participate in 2013
  • Spread awareness of the Creative Commons characteristics of the contest
  • Recognize the work of the winning photographers
  • Draw attention to the work of the volunteers behind Wikimedia, WLM and Wikimedia México.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.
We estimate the attendance of 32 persons to the award ceremony on November 28th, 2012, and the exhibition was visited by near to 150 to 200 people in the next days of exhibition. Unfortunately, the schools not have the ability to measure how many people visited the exhibition, as the staff is dedicated only to the surveillance of the facilities. At the opening in UAM Iztapalapa attend 48 students, in addition to the 4 officials who inaugurated the exhibition. An unofficial estimate is that in IPN were seen by between 800 and 1200 persons for each school. This is only an estimate and not to be taken into account as an official calculation. For an example, in ESIME attends 2,428 students daily and 98 teachers[1]. Considering 1 month and 22 business days, and for a estimation only 5% percent of the total attendance, 2778 persons possibly viewed the exhibition because they were exposed at sites of frequent traffic.
We have information that five volunteers and three participants of the tours in the next edition of 2013 previously viewed the exhibition in 2012.
In the initial information of the exhibition, was written the active role of Creative Commons licenses in the exhibition, as well as the value of Wiki Loves Monuments. At all times, the exhibition featured the logos of the competition, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Mexico. At the awards ceremony at the museum and opening at UAM Iztapalapa were mentioned the efforts of volunteers.
The exhibition was a succesfull way for publicize the contest winning photos of Wiki Loves Monuments, and inspire other mexican photo lovers to participate in 2013. It is not common visibilize the Wikimedia community effort outside the online environment and this is an example for increase the awareness in a project who is not Wikipedia.
This exhibition was an additional stimulus for the winners of 2012 contest. Some of them and their familiar goes to the exhibition to show their work.
Mexico City is huge. We reach with IPN an agreement for the transport and care of the exhibition to more Mexico City boroughs particularly those with less public art galleries and cultural activities like Gustavo A. Madero and Iztapalapa. In addition, in 2013 the institute was in charge of moving the photos, using less time and saving money from volunteers, who need to move in taxi or in a van due to the dimensions of the materials.

Provide an overall assessment of how your project went according to these measures.
Done The exhibition was successful on the planned and non planned venues who are shown. We don't expect in the beginning place the photos more than 2013, and the exhibition is touring at the date of this report, among with the 2013 photos.
Done The contest between 2012 and 2013 increase into more volunteers, activities, sponsors and institutions involved. The award ceremony was held at Museo Universitario del Chopo again and the exhibition tour it happened again due to the success of 2012.
If you were to plan a similar project, would you measure it differently? If yes, please explain how.
