Grants:PEG/Leigh Thelmadatter/Establishing finances of Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey
Goal
edit1) Establish procedures for funding expenses related to projects of Wiki Learning
2) Enable the completion of projects, especially with video, that require being on location (i.e. interviews, filming of artisan's workshops)
Plan
editActivities
editThe main activities will be the ones that we do now, but have not been funded or funded adequately. We run a program for students needing to do community service hours (required by law of all Mexican undergrads) working with Wikipedia. This include students working online, generally on campus or at home as well as a pilot program of 6 Wikipedians-in-residence at the Museo de Arte Popular, to work on animation and video projects related to the musuem's mission. As we need to recruit students with good writing and media skills, things like swag and diplomas go a long way. As we move into video projects, students need to be outside of campus, which incurs travel costs, such as taxi to Mexico City locations (the safest way to transport students and expensive camera and video equipment).
We also do outreach to classes, with 6 classes this semester so far committed to creating content in Spanish Wikipedia, possibly some in English Wikipedia. Although small, things like buttons and stickers help a lot with student motivation.
We plan and execute one of the main projects of an event called Semana i (i Week). This is 5 days when students do not have class but must spend 40 hours working on a project from start to finish. In March of 2015, the campus provided all materials but they have become more restrictive. For example, despite needing identification for students who will be visiting various historical monuments during that week (Sept 21-25, 2015), they denied us money for t-shirts, claiming they are "souvenirs." We learned of this too late to try and get a project grant or a shipment from the Foundation for something like this.
Our last
Impact
editTarget readership
edit1) Wikimedia Commons with the addition of video and photos
2) Spanish Wikipedia (media and text) and lastly English Wikipedia (media primarily)
Fit with strategy
editWith mostly ad hoc resources, we have been able to experiment with various ways to get students involved with Wikipedia, but we are reaching the limit of what we can do in this respect. To date, we have involved over 1000 students and added 10s of millions of bytes to Wikipedia, as well as hundreds of photos along with video and audio files.
Our program attracts over 50% women as well as students with high level writing skills as well as skills in video, audio and animation. We have started formal collaborations with the Museo de Arte Popular and three primary schools. The money will allow us not only to grow the number of students participating but the quantity and quality of these contributions.
Measures of success
editPlease provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG Program Resources for suggested measures of success. Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.
Resources and risks
editResources
editWe have been documenting our successes and membership at in Outreach
Risks
editThe only risk is that the responsible person (Leigh Thelmadatter) is a novice in managing this kind of funding. Since participating students are working to satisfy academic requirements, and Wiki Learning is a popular option, having the necessary people is not a problem.
Budget
editPlease provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines. Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.
