Goal

edit

OSCAL (Open Source Conference Albania) is the first annual conference in Albania organized to promote software freedom, open source software, free culture and open knowledge. The Conference will take place at 14 and 15 May 2015 in Tirana and will gather free libre open source technology users, wikipedians, developers, academics, governmental agencies and people who share the idea that knowledge should be free and open, that software should be free and open for the local community and governments to develop and customize to its needs; and for those who believe that knowledge is a communal property and free and open to everyone. OSCAL provides a fertile ground to build and enhance networking within the tech community, both in the local region and worldwide by being used as a meeting point for a network of individuals and companies with the aim of sponsoring and initiating projects which benefit the people and taxpayers in Albania and which should also result in commercial benefits for the surrounding region.

Plan

Activities

edit

OSCAL is a two days conference promoting open source/free software technologies and open knowledge. Activities happening during those 2 days areː

  • presentations
  • workshops
  • info booth(active 2 days)(Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group)

Among all speakers, we already have confirmed speakers from Wikimedia Czech, Wikimedia Italia, Wikimedia Swiss and two administrator of Albanian Wikipedia. Our target is at least 6 speakers who talk or will host a workshop about Wikimedia projects.

Impact

edit

Target readership

edit

Our main goal is to contribute on Wikipedia Albanian Language. Part of the talks at OSCAL will be about Freedom of Panorama( Jan Louzek) GLAM-wiki(Snezana Strkovska), Wikipedia – Making Albania Accessible(Lars Haefner) and competitions about Wikipedia articles in the Albanian language with the aim of increasing the number of articles in Albanian Language and also increase the number of Wikimedians in our country. Apart from Albanian Wikipedia, Commons is another project that we be on focus.

Fit with strategy

edit

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

-Through an workshop during the conference we aim to increase participation in Albanian Wikipedia from the participants.
-Onboarding and educating new/existing editors through workshop, presentations, info-booth. All these activities during the weekend will maximize the exposure of the Wikipedia project in the local community.
-Presenting at conferences with a targeted audience(FOSS)

Measures of success

edit

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

We will be more focused to increase participation in long term. That's why we will try to select and invite inspiring speakers who work with Wikimedia projects, so the participants after the conference to keep looking and contributing on Wikipedia.
We will run a writing contest also, from which we expect to have these resultsː
-Number of newly registered users: up to 5
-Number of individuals involved: 30
-Number of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects: 15
-Number of new images/media added to Wikimedia article pages: 10

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Resources and risks

edit

Resources

edit

Open Labs members have organized more than 100 activities with average attendance of 15 people during two years on a low budget style. We are an active community with a good knowledge about the MediaWiki platform. Our community has started promoting Wikipedia in an organized way since November 2013, an experience that gives us confidence to continue the project in a more dynamic way. The organizing team has 8 members and at least 16 volunteers who will help during 2 days.

Risks

edit

The booths will be outside the building and if its raining probably the booth may not be active during the whole day.

Budget

edit

Please provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines.

Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.
