Please describe the project in a few sentences
The goal of this project is to conduct two half-day workshops at the Newark and New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers University. I (User: Staticshakedown) am currently one of two remote Wikimedians in Residence for Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) for the 2014-2015 year, and I hope to run these workshops to facilitate training on editing culture and best practices on Wikipedia with in person instruction. The Rutgers University librarians who work with the Wikimedians in Residence have already approved this date and workshop idea, and they are eager to work with me to provide the two venues, advertisement for the event, and my local NJ transportation.

Goals and measures of success

edit

Project goal

edit

Please briefly describe what will be accomplished if the project is successful.

Project goal
The first workshop will be open to the public, with the goal of engaging local New Jersey residents and students to edit wikipedia for the first time (activities will focus on account creation and learning the basics of editing). The focus of the second workshop will be to "train the trainers", with the goal of engaging more advanced users (librarians, professors, and other faculty) to add reliable resources and digital content to close the identified gaps on certain topics. As enumerated in the RUL Wikimedian in Residence goals, the main foci for the 2014-2015 year are the following:
  • Women in Jazz
  • Newark Jazz history
  • Asian immigrant experience in NJ (Chinese and Japanese, include Chinese immigration to NJ, Seabrook experience, Newark Chinatown)
  • Cultural competence in health care

Rutgers Libraries houses several resources on these topics and have expressed an interest in making them available through Wikipedia.

Measures of success

edit

Please provide a list of measurable criteria that will be used determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed.

Measures of success
We will consider this project a success if:
  1. At least 15-18 people show up to each workshop (at least 30 total)
  2. At least 5 people come more than once
  3. At least 5 Rutgers faculty/staff create new accounts and engage in learning to edit Wikipedia
  4. At least 3 librarians are trained to teach others basic editing skills
  5. After picking one of the above four topics for one of the workshops, create at least 10 new pages
  6. Contribute to the longer-term goals of the RUL GLAM project

Project scope and activities

edit

This section describes what will happen if this project is funded. Who will do what, and when?

List of activities
The Workshops will consist of two half-day training sessions at the Newark and New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers University in New Jersey. Librarians at Rutgers University have already agreed to provide the venues, with possibilities including the Institute of Jazz Studies or another University library. For the first session with a focus on new editors, talks have also been initiated to work at a public library. This workshop will follow the guidelines for introducing people to wikipedia (i.e., Wikipedia:Workshop/Sample one-day workshop). The second workshop will be more focused on helping people familiar with Rutgers library resources and the GLAM project accomplish its goals. Possible goals for this workshop include creating a Wikipedia for every Rutger's Oral History archives or using Qualtrics to add video clips to relevant Wikipedia articles on jazz musicians or people knowledgeable about Seabrook Farms.

Budget

Non-financial requirements

edit

See a description of non financial assistance available. Please inform Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) of any requirements for non-financial assistance now.

Requests for non-financial assistance
  • I would like six Wikipedia T-shirts to distribute to the main group of librarians who are working as project sponsors, leaders, and co-leaders.
  • Two packs of Wikimedia sticks, pens, or pins to give away to the Rutgers students (mostly as a novelty 'thank you' for attending a weekend event).

Resources and Risks

Resources

This section is used to highlight your potential for successfully executing this project.

Consider including the following information:

  • List of team members (names or usernames):
  • Onwiki evidence of community support (such as a project about this discussion):
  • Endorsements from community members or movement groups:
  • Special skills or qualifications this potential grantee or project lead brings to this project:
  • Evidence of past success in executing similar projects:

  • User:Staticshakedown --I would be the person responsible for running these workshops. I have over 7500 edits and have been active on Wikipedia for several years (first opened an account in 2008). I also attended the Wikipedia:2014 Workshop Facilitator Training recently to learn how to run workshops. I was chosen specifically for this training because of my collaboration underway with Rutgers to add content that diminishes systemic bias on Wikipedia and because of my desire to extend this collaboration further through in person workshops.
  • Wikipedia:GLAM/Rutgers is the aforementioned RUL GLAM homepage that we began this year. This project has been underway since the summer. Librarians (including User:Newark kantz, User:Darmo$hi10flyBo, User:Wkinforocks, User:Wkpdfan, User:Graceagn, User:Lily.todorinova, and others) have all started editing wikipedia as a result of this project and they are all faculty or graduate students at Rutgers. Together with these people and the other Wikimedian in Residence, User:WeijiBaikeBianji, we have already added or expanded 18 articles, one of which has featured in the DYK section. This group and others would all be in attendance at the workshops with the exception of Weiji, who lives in Wisconsin and may be able to attend remotely.
  • The librarians at Rutgers are fully invested in this project. They are designing and prepared to disseminate flyers and other informational material to those at the University who would be interested in attending, and are securing space for these events on (and possibly off) campus.
Risks

This section is used to identify key risks or threats that would prevent you from achieving your project goals and how you would mitigate those risks and threats.

  • There may be difficulty in recruiting students to attend the first weekend workshop. I have been warned that many in Newark tend to go to New York during the weekends.
    • The Rutgers group has advised me on this November date to avoid any football games and to avoid colder weather in winter in attempts to mitigate this problem. They have also agreed to advertise the event locally once this grant has been approved.

Impact

edit

In the sections below, please describe how the project is related to the Wikimedia mission and Wikimedia's strategic priorities.

Fit to strategy

edit
How will this project support the key organizational objectives of
  • increasing reach (more people will access or contribute to Wikipedia or our other projects),
  • participation (more people actually contributing),
  • quality (more content, more useful content, or higher-quality content),
  • credibility (more trust in our projects),
  • organizational maturity and effectiveness (how it will move you or the Wikimedia community forward),
  • or financial sustainability (how it will help you achieve more in the long run)?
This statement should address at least one of the strategic priorities listed here specifically. See Project and Event Grants program criteria for decision making.

This project will increase reach and participation in the Wikipedia community by recruiting first-time editors and giving them the tools to learn how to edit, and teaching finer technical skills to more advanced users. Rutgers University Libraries contain a unique reserve of information (e.g., oral histories, theses, videos), especially in New Jersey history and jazz history, and the faculty and staff there have already expressed an interest in transcribing this information to wikipedia (esp. with a goal of including diverse POVs, e.g., women and Asian Americans). Therefore, this GLAM project is predicted to have a long-lasting impact in producing long-term editors who have both a large resource and talent pool to improve the quality of articles that are underrepresented.

Benefits

edit
If the project will benefit a specific online community, please tell us.
The goal for this series of workshops will be to teach librarians, library science graduate students, and other faculty, staff, and students from Rutgers University to learn how to edit wikipedia so that they can be independent and productive contributors. This project will mainly target the English Wikipedia. However, several of the participants have bilingual fluency in other languages (esp. Mandarin Chinese) who may contribute to wikipedia projects in other language (e.g., Chinese, Spanish).

Please provide a brief statement about how the project is related to other work in the Wikimedia movement. For example, does the project fit into a work area such as GLAM, education, organizational development, editor retention, or outreach?
This project is part of GLAM Rutgers University Libraries and will be hosted by at least one of the university's campuses in New Jersey. It is part of a greater educational outreach program to get people in the New Jersey area to contribute to Wikipedia.

If successful, will the project have the potential to be replicated successfully by other individuals, groups, or organizations? Please explain how in 1–2 sentences.
Yes, one of the goals of the GLAM RUL project is to produce independent editors who will be able to continue editing and hosting outreach events independently. After being acquainted with Wikipedia policies by the Wikimedians in residence, the Rutgers librarians hope to continue to add content without the assistance of the Wikimedians in Residence. This is Rutger University's first year involved in Wikipedia, and based on conversations with the librarians and the positive results that we have already had, I believe that this will be a project that they continue for several years.

Please list other benefits to the movement here.
I think these workshops will be the beginning of a solid collaboration between Wikipedia and Rutgers Libraries. The librarians there have already mentioned to me that they plan to write peer-reviewed journal articles on the results of the GLAM project. If this grant submission process is successful, I have little doubt that Rutgers will apply for their own grans independently to continue running workshops or other projects independently in the future. Based on my success of these two workshops, I would also be very interested in starting workshops or working more closely with other editors locally in Pittsburgh.
