Lessons learned

What worked well?
I prepared with a curator from SeMA. She hadn't had any experience on Wikipedia, so I could know what I never thought as a skilled Wikipedian. We promoted our event at Yonsei Univ. to help student understand Wikimedia projects as we planned. We prepared a list of articles we needed to edit, and I checked them to reduce notability and citation problems. The list guided new users, and most of participants created or edited articles under the subject of our edit-a-thon. We asked to create accounts before the event, so we could avoid wasting time. We also requested to write drafts and prepare references, so many articles from this event could have at least a format of paragraphs.
SeMA created beautiful posters for the event, and distributed it under CC BY-SA 3.0. The institution displayed the poster on the front page of its website, and I created a project page on Korean Wikipedia, as we planned. SeMA wrote a press material and some news agencies reported our event. [1][2]
What didn't work?
I explained about Wikipedia and wiki mark-up simply before the edit-a-thon. I think I didn't explain rules and culture of Wikipedia enough. I expected participants to create or edit article in our list, but some of the attendees didn't do that. A few of their articles were deleted. I think I needed to explain about the notability policy more although it is difficult for new user to understand. I didn't expect that other Wikipedians doubted attendees of our event as a troll. A user of Wikipedia applied to delete articles created by the attendees although it did not have notability problem, so it made them confused.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
To keep participants' attention, we need to hold serial edit-a-thons. Also, I will create a template to announce that this user is a participant of an edit-a-thon not a troll.

Yes. Most of new users created their own articles under our subject: Asia, women, and art, and most of participants were women. I listed articles created and edited in this event at w:ko:위키백과:에디터톤/판타시아 에디터톤#결과.

Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
We compiled a survey after the edit-a-thon, and total 24 participants answered our questions. 22 of 24 respondents said that they never edited Wikipedia or just corrected spelling. 21 of them said they wanted to attend follow-up educational programs or edit-a-thon, and 21 of them said they intended to edit Wikipedia after this event.
