WIkimedia User Group Nigeria/Wiki Photo Tours
The English and Yoruba Wikipedia contain articles (stub at least) of at least 2000 municipalities in Nigeria but only few of these articles have photographs, and most of the pictures come from towns where Wikipedia editors/photographers live. The aim of this project is to support the creation of freely licensed photos of Nigeria municipalities (and associated landmarks) through reasonable funding of travel expenses, food and hotel accommodation of volunteer photographers.

Goal

edit

The goal of this project is to provide freely licensed photos of at least 1000 - 1200 Nigeria municipalities, castles, nature reserves, rivers, creeks and other landmarks that were not available before. We also aimed to use at least 500 of these images on articles that lack these images on Wikipedia and create at least 50 new articles for at least 50 of the images.

Plan

edit

Activities

edit

Nigeria is divided into six geopolitical zones and federal capital territory. The Six geopolitical zones consists of South-West, South-East, North-Central, South-South, North-East, North-West. The first stage of this project will focus on Lagos and Oyo State. Our team of volunteer photographers will visit these states using commercial buses between 25 March 2016 and 24 June 2016. During these trips, we will take images of Nigeria municipalities, castles, nature reserves, rivers, creeks and other landmarks that could be used for various purposes on Wikimedia projects. The images obtained will be described, uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and categorized. On the weekends when people are not traveling, the participants and the user group will work on uploading images, adding them to articles and creating new articles. However, volunteers can work for 5 hours per day but based on our past experience, an average Nigerian Wikimedian/Volunteer can only upload a maximum of 50 high quality images per day/session. This is due to several factors including poor internet connection service in Nigeria. With 10 Wikimedians/Volunteers we can upload 500 - 600 images per uploading session. We will sponsor their local travel cost to the uploading venue. We will also provide breakfast and lunch for them.

Fit with strategy

edit

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

The project will provide new photographs to support Wikipedia articles about Nigeria, thus increasing their quality, as well as other projects that benefit from freely available media.

Measures of success

edit

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

We will consider this project a success if we

  • Upload at least 1000 - 1200 images on common
  • Use at least 500 images on at least 500 articles on Wikipedia
  • Create at least 50 new articles for at least 50 of the images that have no existing articles on Wikipedia

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Risks

edit
Risk Possible negative results Mitigation
Part 1: Internal
Difficulties in securing the participation of experienced photographers.
  • Poor qualities of Images
  • Low number of images
  • We have written a letter of introduction to 37 experienced photographers within the south-western state of Nigeria, explaining the objectives of the project and importance of those images on Nigeria related articles on Wikipedia. 15 of the experienced photographers contacted have confirmed their willingness to participate voluntarily in the project.
Some communities in Nigeria will not allow the snapping of images without being compensated.
  • Low number of images
  • Low number of communities’ coverage
  • Our team executives have met with leaders of some of the communities that are likely to request for compensation and have agreed to cooperate with us after being enlighten of the importance of the project to Nigeria related articles on Wikipedia.
