Project scope and activities

edit

This section describes what will happen if this project is funded. Who will do what, and when?

List of activities

P1 - Digitization: Digitization program: To have a significant part of the license-free compulsory Armenian literature in Wikisource. In 2014, we have digitized the Armenian Encyclopedia, and placed it in Wikisource. We are currently preparing a list of license-free Eastern-Armenian literature that needs to be digitized over the next 12 months. We will follow up to get access to the material, scan, pass it through OCR and place it in Wikisource.

  • Digitization of books currently becoming public domain
  • interface with different libraries to upload license-free Armenian literature in Wikisource
  • work with the appropriate authorities to allow putting in Wikisource, at a minimum, all educational materials published by the government.

P2 - Wiki Loves Science: Wiki loves science: We have often received feedback that articles on scientific topics are noticeably lacking in the Armenian Wikipedia. Through the Wiki Loves Science initiative, we hope to enrich Armenian Wikipedia on topics of science. This year, our concentration will be on Biology and Physics. Our goal is to add 300 new articles in Biology, and 100 articles in Physics.

  • Meeting with Young biologists association and chain of workshops
  • Workshops for all institutions related to physics.
  • Editing weekend for Young biologists
  • Editing weekend for physicists
  • Editing weekend for chemists
  • support efforts to enrich articles minimum in two fields of science by working with universities and the scientific community

P3 - Support and Increase active WikiClubs: In addition to the two existing WikiClubs in Yerevan and Gyumri, we will establish Wiki Clubs in 7 new cities, specifically in Vanadzor, Yeghvard, Ashtarak, Talin, Aparan, Goris, Stepanakert (Artsakh) - With the creation of active Clubs, we will expand our membership and spread the wiki culture among more communities (living in cities other than the capital). The expanded membership will allow us to implement GLAM and other projects outside of the capital over the next few years.

  • Each month, interact with the active editors in a selected major city and help establish a club in that city.
  • Maintain interactions with the clubs already established, and maintain enthusiasm to train and attract new comers

P4 - Educational Programs: Education program: Currently we have a Wiki Education program in 7 schools. We aim to add 8 more (2 a quarter). The goal of getting 8 additional schools (to make a total of 15 school) involved in the wiki education programs is to start building a population that is knowledgeable in the mechanics of becoming a wiki editor, and building up a community of future contributors to wiki. Our experience indicates that once the "wiki culture" penetrates a school, there is little needed by the Wikimedia volunteers to maintain the enthusiasm. The students and teacher staff sustain the program. After the initial training and the handholding during the first 6 months, the Wikimedia volunteers are involved solely in providing suggestion on what topics the students could write about - or topics they can translate from other languages, providing statistics on level of contributions in different schools, re-training teachers in the rare event that there is a turnover in teaching staff, informing students on further training provided in the schools or other central locations, about advanced topics in wiki.

  • High School Educational Programs - add two schools a quarter to the Wikipedia Education program.
  • Training programs for General Population - headed by the members in various WikiClubs

P5 – GLAM: - We have recently signed an agreement with the National Library of Armenia to provide digitized content to be added to WikiSource. - We aim to sign an agreement with Matenadaran, where they will provide digitized content in Armenian to be deposited in WikiSource, to serve as reference material to those editing in Armenian. - We aim to start discussions with Erebuni museum on areas of cooperation, and accordingly set up a plan, sign an agreement for providing digitized content and/or possibly photos. We will follow up with them, to organize working sessions to ensure the execution of the agreement, and to support them in overcoming difficulties they may encounter.

  • Meeting with Cultural institutions of Ministry of Culture.
  • Cooperation with Matenadaran: Sign agreement of cooperation in the first half of the year; coordinate the creation of at least 10 articles about the main collections of Matenadaran.
  • Cooperation with National Library: Sign agreement to use NL books and scanned books in order to upload digitized material to Wikisource.
  • Cooperation with Erebuni museum: Sign agreement of cooperation. Support writing of a minimum of 10 articles about the cultural heritage available in the museum.

P6 - Expand Wiki Commons:

  • Wiki Loves Earth (Budget for this project has been moved to the Wiki Loves Science project. Please see the discussion page for more details.)
  • Famous Armenians - Photo Depository. Combine famous Armenians list and organize meeting for taking pictures or sharing pictures.

P7 - International Projects:

  • Cooperation with Estonia
  • Wikimania 2014: Susanna Mkrtchyan and Mher Bekaryan will attend and share ideas and experiences.
  • WMCEE 2014: Susanna Mkrtchyan and Lilit Tarkhanyan will attend and share ideas and experiences.
  • WMCON 2015: Susanna Mkrtchyan and a colleague will attend and share ideas and experience.
  • Wikimedia Educational Conference: Susanna Mkrtchyan and a colleague will attend and share ideas and experience.

P8 - General Wikimedia Office management: *To set Wikimedia Armenia office. (Budget covered through sources outside of the budget request provided within this Grant Proposal). With the successful implementation of the project, for the next 25 years, we will not be dependent on outside sources for rental expenses of office space for Wikimedia Armenia. We will also have additional space that will also allow us to organize WikiClub Yerevan activities in parallel with Educational and organizational activities.

  • Support Computing Environment (internet cost, server room and server management, network management, PC support)
  • Acquire office space - free of rent for a period of 25 years
- We are waiting for the signing of documents by the prime minister about providing office space to Wikimedia Armenia.
- Hakob Hakobyan, the director of Intellectual Renaissance Foundation, will prepare the renovation project plan and associated cost and will present it to Artur Janibekyan, the president of Intellectual Renaissance, who will approve the budget. Mr. Hagopyan will oversee the renovation effort

P9 - Activities that lead to the introduction of Western Armenian as a language in Wikipedia: To open Wikipedia for Western Armenian language - No funding is requested for this effort. It is included in this plan for completeness of activities planned for the upcoming 12 months. The Armenian Wikipedia today has articles in Eastern Armenian. Western Armenian is the Armenian language that is the mother tongue of about 5,000,000 Armenians in the diaspora. Eastern Armenian is the language used by Armenians currently in Armenia and the X-Soviet Union. There are a lot of common words within the two languages, because they both originate from one common source - Medieval Armenian. However, the Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian languages differ extensively in grammar, vocabulary and dictation. We are currently engaging individuals to contribute in Western Armenian. Since most of those individuals live in the diaspora, we aim to use this year to gain some experience and gage expectations. So, you are correct in your assessment that "more people will edit Wikipedia in Western Armenia" is very obscure. It stems from our inexperience in how best to interact/train editors. We will use this year's experience to form an executable plan for next year with concrete and measurable goals.

  • interface with different libraries to upload license-free Armenian literature in Wikisource

Risks

This section is used to identify key risks or threats that would prevent you from achieving your project goals and how you would mitigate those risks and threats.

Articles related to various fields of science and education don't exist in Armenian Wikipedia or are very poor. Moreover there aren't books in Armenian for university students. It would be very hard to grow Armenian Wikipedia on these topics. That's why we need to do most effort to succeed.
Difficulty in working with GLAM staff. Will be expanded.

Impact

edit

In the sections below, please describe how the project is related to the Wikimedia mission and Wikimedia's strategic priorities.

Fit to strategy

edit
How will this project support the key organizational objectives of
  • increasing reach (more people will access or contribute to Wikipedia or our other projects),
By opening WikiClubs in 8 new cities in Armenia, Wikimedia Armenia will be able to train new contributors to Wikipedia, and gain experience with the talent the active editors have, and create a set of resources through which we can launch further educational and awareness programs in future years.
  • participation (more people actually contributing),
Through our outreach programs to GLAMS and those who speak in Western Armenian, and through our Education programs, and via the events we organize, we expect to increase the number of people contributing.
  • quality (more content, more useful content, or higher-quality content),
* Events like Wiki loves science, our activities with GLAMS, the training programs, education programs, western Armenian effort will simulate the creation of more content.
* Wikimedia Armenia staff will monitor what topics are being accessed most, and will publish on its main page the top 10 useful articles of the month.
* Wikimedia Armenia will publish (on its main page) the Subject of one article a month that will be targeted for higher-quality content.
  • credibility (more trust in our projects),
Media coverage with high profile individuals supporting Wikimedia Armenia will be used as a means of gaining credibility for the activities of Wikimedia Armenia. Individuals from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Defense, GLAM administrators, respected educators, businessmen and cultural figures will air their promise to write articles, or share the fact that they have individually contributed
  • organizational maturity and effectiveness (how it will move you or the Wikimedia community forward),
* By hiring one individual who will support the activities of the various projects that we have, we aim to put some formality around the administration of the events, so we will not be totally dependent on our volunteers in the knowledge of plans, contacts, progress, program knowledge, etc.
* By the creation of WikiClubs in 8 new cities, we aim to involve more people in spreading the wiki culture among the population - a must that will allow us to share the burden of the effort from a few to many
* By increasing membership, thus increasing the number of people who will take ownership of program execution, we aim to grow a young population of leaders who will understand the culture of contributing to the community and will, by example, spread the culture of sharing information and reaching out to others with their knowledge and expertise.
  • financial sustainability (how it will help you achieve more in the long run)?
This will be a challenge to plan for. We hope to carry discussions on the topic with our members and look for input and ideas from other countries. For now, we are concentrating on achievements that are pre-requisites to attaining financial sustainability; mainly:
* increase in active contributors
* increase in good articles
* increase in types of topics (scientific et al)
* the spread of the wiki culture within the country
This statement should address at least one of the strategic priorities listed here specifically. See Project and Event Grants program criteria for decision making.

All of the projects in this grant, whether educational, organizational, GLAM related or related to the creation WikiClubs, are activities that will ensure sustainability of impact beyond the duration of the grant. They all aim at spreading the wiki culture in the country, increasing participation and membership, and improving quality and quantity of contributions. We are confident the effort will keep on giving, and the digitization effort, as well as the growth in people infrastructure will fuel later work.

Benefits

edit
If the project will benefit a specific online community, please tell us.
During this period will increase the number of editors in regions and will be enriched the
  • Users of Eastern Armenian Wikipedia for articles and media content.
  • Users of English, Russian, Arabic, Ukranian, Estonian Wikipedias for article content
  • Users of Wikimedia Commons for photo and media content.
  • User of Eastern Armenian Wikisource for textual content.
  • Users of Western Armenian Wikipedia for articles and media content.

Please provide a brief statement about how the project is related to other work in the Wikimedia movement. For example, does the project fit into a work area such as GLAM, education, organizational development, editor retention, or outreach?
The main focus of this project is Outreach since it will be aimed at recruiting and supporting new editors, building strong relationships with cultural and educational institutions. Particular programs fit into GLAM (in particular, partnership with museums and libraries), education (collaboration with schools), organizational development (purchasing equipment that will be used by organization members in wikiClubs). We are also reaching out to the segments of the 5 Million Armenians whose heritage uses Western Armenian as a language.
If successful, will the project have the potential to be replicated successfully by other individuals, groups, or organizations? Please explain how in 1–2 sentences.
Wikimedia Armenia's activities aimed at creating a wiki-minded community of users that continue to grow and contribute in an accelerated mode can serve as a resource to other communities that are being introduced to the wiki culture.
Please list other benefits to the movement here.
* Increase in the presence of free knowledge groups within Armenia
* Improvement in quality of articles over time - High school students who are active contributors, having internalized the culture of being free knowledge contributors, will continue to contribute as they become more educated, and pursue their careers, hence gradually improving the quality of the articles they contribute.
* Increase in Armenian related topics in languages other than Armenian - Once Western Armenian editors are trained in contributing to Western Armenian Wikipedia, they will also, with a high probability of likelihood, contributor Armenia related topics in the language of the country they reside in, or are citizens of. This will lead to an increase of free knowledge contributions of Armenia/Armenian related information in other languages.
