Activities

Two videos were produced in Spanish. The first one released includes a description about Wikipedia and its five pillars, while the second one explained what is Wikimedia Argentina, its main goals and activities. Both videos were presented by actress Mariana Esnoz.

Project goal and measures of success

edit

Project goal

edit

Both videos were produced and released as expected. The video «¿Qué es Wikipedia?» was received enthusiastically by the Wikimedia community, especially Spanish Wikipedia and other Ibero-American chapters. The video was selected as a featured resource in Spanish Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

The videos were uploaded in Wikimedia Commons, YouTube and Vimeo, but its reach has been limited. On the other hand, the video has been broadcasted several times in presentations given by Wikimedia Argentina members and other Iberocoop chapters. Some of these presentations have more than a hundred participants, increasing the reach of the videos.

The videos are also available at the official site of Wikimedia Argentina and there have been talks with the National Television Broadcaster (RTA) to show the video about Wikipedia on an educational channel. The video was also featured at the Wikimedia blog on May 23rd, 2012.

Measures of success

edit
  • Video has been used in different presentations and workshops about Wikipedia, being an important resource to increase the number of new users and contributors.
  • Video statistics:
Vimeo YouTube Total
¿Qué es Wikipedia? 742 233 975
¿Qué es Wikimedia Argentina? 130 52 182
¿Qué es Wikimedia Argentina? (short version) 38 13 51
As of September 12th, 2012.

Lessons learned

edit

What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects?

Although videos were made for an Argentinean audience, videos were presented with a accent that was familiar and natural to Argentineans but more neutral than usual. This allowed the video to be useful not only for Argentina but for most Latin America, being much more useful for the spread of the Wikimedia movement.

What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation? The video will help outreach activities in the Spanish-speaking countries, most of them developing nations (part of the so-called "Global South"), supporting the efforts to increase reach and diversify participation in a global scale.
