Lessons learned

edit
What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects? Consider the following questions and respond with 1 - 2 paragraphs.
What went well?
  • Near 30 new volunteers were integrated.
  • We achieve a contest not only of "upload photos", because we arrange workshops of photography and CC licenses, photowalks with historians and live help with photo experts, and a panel of discussion on heritage and copyright.
  • We are one of the countries with more mentions in the media.
  • Has increased the number of participating photographers.
  • We had best sponsors and prizes than the 2012 edition.
  • We achieve a great discount on printing photos.
What did not go well?
  • Decreased the number of pictures.
  • We can't obtain the list of missing monuments, listed by INBA.
  • We had a delay in delivery of posters, t-shirts and stickers, which were projected to be ready in mid-August.
  • The Merida's volunteers cancel the support for the contest at the last minute.
  • Were very few evaluating photographs.
  • One key fail in the project, and the overall administration of Wikimedia Mexico, was concurrent big events who results into a significant delay in the report of this grant and others.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
  • Ask the WLM support (grant) with much more time in advance.
  • Look for more alternatives to get the monument list of INBA.
  • Eengage more volunteers to stay in the whole process of competition, from planning until evaluation.
  • Contemplate delay times with printers to get the products on time.
  • Seek more volunteers in at least 5 Mexico cities, to have a greater presence in the country.
  • Look for a dedicated volunteer to financial and reports.
  • Search for ways to know more information about the experience of the single contestant.

Project goal and measures of success

edit

This section should reference the project goals and measures of success described in the approved grant submission. See Grants:PEG/WM MX/Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 to review the goals and metrics listed in the approved submission.

Project goal

edit
Provide the project goal here.

Copied from the grant request:

Successfully perform of the Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Mexico.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.
We achieve the project goal because Wiki Loves Monuments México 2013 esentially increases the number of participants rather than 2012, and we pass from a simple contest to an experience to a program of activities focused in photography and heritage, conduced by a significantly-increased basis of volunteers. Our opinion is what we have more awareness, difussion and innovation in comparation to other countries participants of the contest.

Measures of success

edit

The t-shirt says #IAmAWikiVolunteer

Example of graphic identity for the contest.

Photo walk in Puebla.

Photo walk in Guadalajara.
List the measures of success exactly as provided in the approved grant submission, and evaluate your project according to each measure listed there.

Note: measures copied from the grant request:

Measures of success
  • Overcoming the number of photos of the last year. Unfortunately, most of the countries have a general decreasing of the number of uploaded photos this year. Mexico scored 6,794 photos this year, which puts him on the 15th. global and the second place in Latin America countries. Such amount represents 1.83% of the total collected this year from all over the world for the competition photographs. Respect to the number of the participants, with 630 this year, Mexico was the fifth in the world in number of individual participants in Wiki Loves Monuments, surpassed only by India (1,485), Russia (912), United States (872) and France (642). That number represents a decrease of 132 participants last year, and in 2012, 762 people participated. What percentage means a 17% stake in one year to another.
  • Increasing the voluntary basis of Wikimedia México in Mexico City and Puebla. Wiki Loves Monuments increases dramatically the voluntary basis involved in the contest (26 signs in the Wikimedia Mexico wiki and other doesn't sign but participate, 10 more or less). This was divided into this key areas and roles (quoted from the Wikimedia Mexico strategy for the event):
    • Management and Logistics
    • Photo tours
    • Press conference and awards
    • Design
    • Communication and media
    • General support
  • Realization of at least 3 related activities in Puebla, Guadalajara and Mérida. This was partially succesfully, because the committed community of Mérida decide to cancel their planned participation in the contest. In the other hand, the contest was a catalyst element for the communities in Puebla and Guadalajara. They made three photo walks with a total attendance of 80 people and 5 new volunteers interested in join Wikimedia Mexico. The photo walk in Puebla was published in the Wikimedia blog.

Other measures of success is:

  • Mentions in media. Due to a public Media Strategy developed by Wikimedia Mexico spokesman, we scored some achievements:
    • Mention in Primero Noticias, TV morning news most viewed in Mexico.
    • Mention in Sopitas.com, most read blog in Mexico.
    • Near to 50 mentions in websites, newspapers, TV and radio. Some of them are quoted here.
  • Increase of sponsors, included Carl Zeiss, the leader of photo lenses in the world.
  • Design of a unique graphic identity of the contest.
  • Increase from near to 600 followers in Facebook in 2012 to currently 2688.
Provide an overall assessment of how your project went according to these measures.

Wiki Loves Monumets México 2013 was one of the key projects of Wikimedia Mexico in 2013 and gave to the chapter more trust itself as an organization, plus new volunteers, contacts, sponsors but the motivation of perform big challenges in the country according the importance of WLM. Because the decreasing in the numbers, we have the challenge for make a better WLM in this year, and investigate what is the main reason behind that fact.

If you were to plan a similar project, would you measure it differently? If yes, please explain how.
We need to know more about the overall experience of the participant in all the process of the contest. Not only in Mexico, in fact. Some key answers are unknown like the reason in the decrease of the number of the photos, the general evaluation of the steps for upload photos, and how we can improve the contest.
