Activities and lessons learned

Activities

The first workshop for WFA 2015 participants in Cape Town, South Africa on the 25th May 2015. The event sought to show participants -mostly drone pilots- how to submit content to Wikimedia Commons and use it on Wikipedia.

Created partnership with FPV Fest to promote the competition amoungst the local drone community.
Conducted three workshops in April 2015 to show potential participants how to enter and add their entries to Wikipedia as well as clarify concerns around Creative Commons copyright issues.

Lessons learned

What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?

What went well, or is going well?

Be clearer about competition rules of entry. Because we were not clear in the stated rules about who could enter we had entries from around the world which could not be disqualified based on their geographical origion. In the future we will need to either clearly state that the competition is either open to entries from all over the world or that all entries must be taken within a particular geographical area. This lead to one of the winning entries (first prize for best video footage) not being from Africa.
Too local: although we had a few sumbissions from an indervidual in Switzerland the overwhelming majoritory of entries were of locations in the Western Cape area of South Africa and Cape Town in particular. If this event is to be repeated it would be avised to try and expand the area from which photographs are taken so as to broaden the nature of the content submitted thereby further increasing the likely usability of content on other Wiki projectes such as Wikipedia.
Under estimated catering costs of the workshop events. If this event is held again in the future either catering should be added to the budget upfront. A concious desicion to provide catering was only taken after the grant was accepted as participants were attending the workshops late in the day after work on week days when they would usally eat dinner. It was judged that not providing some catering to participants would have a significantly negative impact on the turnout to these after hours workshops.
Use 'number of pictures used on Wikis' as the main metric of success. Number of photographs submitted is a misleading number that produces a lot of media that has little use and makes it harder to measure the number of articles that submitted pictures are used on Wikipedia articles. Until a tool is developed to measure the number of Wiki pages media in a particular category are used on it is advised to have fewer high quality images so as to more easily measure Wikipedia usage rates.

Learning patterns

A playful logo builds identity and invites interaction: We found that a good logo increased interest and advertised the event as being open to a boarder community than just the drone community.
Partnering with like minded organisations to increase participation and multiply impact. We partnered with the organisers of a local/national drone festival who were already very well connected with the 1000+ strong drone community in South Africa. We found that the majority of participants, including most winners, learnt about this event through our partner organisations. Without their involvement we would not have been successful.

Best photograph. Currently used on two articles on en.Wikipedia, namely for Table Bay and Bloubergstrand

2nd best photograph. Currently used on three language Wikipedia's for the article on Pringle Bay and is "Most Valued" image for that category.

Best Video footage. Currently used on 3 Wikis.

2nd Best video footage. Currently used on 3 Wikis for the article on Rhodes Memorial. Was 'Media of the Day' on the 27 May 2015.

Best use on Wikipedia prize. Currently used on 6 Wikis, 3 on en.Wikipedia alone. Was 'Media of the Day' on 28 March 2015.

The focus of this project is to increase the quantity and quality of aerial photographs and video media of important public landmarks in Africa. With a particular focus on content from drones.

The event was a moderate success. On one hand a high proportion of submissions were used to illustrate Wikipedia articles but on the other hand slightly less than one third of the target number of submissions were achieved.

Learning question: Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?

Our work increase a) awareness about editing Wikipedia and contributing to the commons amoungst a highly technically able group of people who have great potential to improve articles and b) increased their motivation to contribute due to this competition and accompanying workshops. We know it increased their motivation due to the excitement and possitive feedback it generated at the festerval and the direct feedback the event orgaisers received from the events participants. However unfortunately no new editors have yet made any serious contributions on a consistent basis since the conclusion of this event. A future learning for this event is to organise a post photograph submission edit-a-thon to prompt people to edit Wikipedia.

By producing high impact low altitude aerial photographs and media we were able to greatly enhance over 77 articles with these images. It is likely that this number will increase as more editors use these images to illustrate more articles as the userabilty of this media is so great.
