editJoburgpedia Sites
editMore information on Joburgpedia is organized on the following two Wikis:
Support Lobbying:Through Local Stakeholders and Partners
edit- Regular communication was maintained with the three supporting local stakeholders, City of Johannesburg; Johannesburg Heritage Foundation and The Heritage portal. The following lobbying was done.
- City of Johannesburg: Immovable Heritage Department (Eric Itzkin)
- Official endorsement of Joburgpedia by the city of Johannesburg was offered well before this grant was approved, however the City requested an preliminary assessment and impact report from the department to evaluate continued involvement. This report was written by Eric Itzkin (CoJ) and reviewed by Dumisani ndubane (Wikimedia ZA). The report was submitted to the Mayoral Committee for scrutiny and approval on 2013-08-21. This report was accepted and approved. Eric Itzkin has been mandated to do a financial impact and feasibility study on future Joint ventures with Wikimedia ZA with regards to JoburgpediA. Permission was also granted for gradual release of original research material and non-sensitive archives including historical photographs under creative commons license.
- The heritage Portal
- (James Ball)
- The heritage portal holds a considerable amount of photographs and information about historical and heritage sites in and around Johannesburg. After attending one outreach event and numerous correspondence with Wikimedia ZA and Roger Bamkin, James Ball decided to adopt creative commons license for the heritage Portal site and in so doing opening doors to multitude of historic photographs, audio and more.
- Johannesburg Heritage Foundation
- The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation has made available original research material and historic photographs, under a condition that these are carefully digitised as the original copies are kept in their archives. This grant request did not unfortunately include for the cost of digitizing and thus this has not yet been explored.
Joburgpedia QRPlaques: Production, Delivery & Installation
edit- There were twelve selected sites to receive JoburgpediA QRplaques. Only ten have been completed thus far. One Plaque (Desmond Tutu House - Soweto) is still awaiting permission from the Tutu family before installation can be completed. The Bramfischer House Plaque could not be produced due to an error in printing. It was decided to abandon this plaque as the cost to produce and courier just one plaque from Monmouth in UK far outweighed the benefits of installing this plaque. Below is a gallery of the ten installed plaques currently:
-
Greek Orthodox Church Plaque
-
David Webster House Plaque
-
Friedenskirche Lutheran Church Plaque
-
Fordsburg Square Plaque
-
Satyagraha House Plaque
-
Rahima Moosa House Plaque
-
Orlando East Library Plaque

Joburgpedia Outreach:
edit- Completed Outreach events
- Event No. 1: Edit-A-Thon and Kick Off Meeting (08-Jun-2013)
- The launch of this pilot was held in Johannesburg at the Africa Museum. This event was used as a launch and kick-off meeting for all stake holders. Unfortunately all stakeholders (CoJ; Heritage Portal and Johannesburg Heritage Foundation Representatives were unable to attend this meeting due to urgent commitments that developed.
- The attendance was very poor with a lot of invitees having had difficulty in finding the venue despite google maps and facebook event reminders having been sent.
- Event No. 2: Youth Day Edit-A-Thon (16 Jun-2013)
- This Edit-a-Thon was organised on June 16 (Youth Day). We had hoped that Naledi Secondary School in Soweto would be the host venue, however it became a political hot potato months before the Youth Day event. It was then decided that Meadowlands High be used in lieu. This school was still able to capture the essence of Youth day, having been instrumental in events that lead to the student Uprising in Naledi High. This event attempted to focus youth participation in creating quality Wikipedia articles in native languages.
- Prior to the event, The school did not have an article on Wikipedia in any language. The event was well attended by atleast two of the local stakeholders (James Ball and Eric Itzkin) who can be seen on the picture to the right. Unfortunately due to logistics delays, the actual JoburgpediA plaque had not yet been installed. Atleast 15 people attended the event (excluding Wikimedia ZA volunteers). This included the school principal and some heads of departments at the school. Unfortunately most of the learners had gone to the Orlando stadium, so there was a handful that came through for the demonstrations.
- Event No. 3: CBD Edit-A-Thon (27-Jul-2013)
- This Edit-a-Thon was organised in one of the buildings which Ghandi lived in Johannesburg. It is the success story of Joburgpedia. The event was attended by at least 10 volunteers excluding Wikimedia ZA reps and museum/guest house curators. The curators took the group through a short tour of the house.
- The arrangements and chronology of Ghandi and Kallenberg's life in the house are done exquisitly and material is referenced very well. This set up made it easy to start an acceptable stub on the English Wikipedia. After the English stub was developed into an acceptable article, a workshop was conducted on how to translate the English Article to other local language Wikipedias.
- The article on Satyagraha house was translated into 5 small languages (Zulu, Sesotho, Xitsonga, Chishona, Igbo) and also in Afrikaans and French. All the translations were done simultaneously. The curator and his assistant were shown how to scan the QRcode and indicated that they plan to incorporate the QR code scanning into the museum tour for their future guests.
- Cancelled/Postponed Outreach events
-
- The following planned outreach events had to be cancelled due to a number of factors discussed below:
- Event No. 4: Back to Soweto Edit-A-Thon (Jul-2013)
- Event No. 5: Gommorah Edit-A-Thon (August-2013)
- Event No. 6: Final Day Edit-A-Thon ( August-2013)
- The following planned outreach events had to be cancelled due to a number of factors discussed below:
- The major contributing factor for event cancellation was lack of free venue within the planned dates. This was further complicated by a severe lack of volunteers during the month of August as most Wikimedia ZA members were attending Wikimania in Hong Kong. The unexpected delays in installation of the plaques shifted and consumed much the volunteer and project lead attention and as a result the events had to be cancelled. It was resolved that more event out reach modeled around the Satyagraha success.
Lessons learned
edit- What went well?
- This project had a good reception from local authorities and heritage formations. That was very important in approaching actual custodians of the selected sites to receive plaques. In the case of Satyagraha house the buyin of the curator made them a willing source of information. The collaboration and good communication amongst local stakeholders in order to clarify the vision of the project and its far reaching implications assisted in convincing them to release valuable historic material. The volunteers who managed to attend the events were truly inspiring and have continued to follow us on social media in order to find further opportunities to learn how to edit Wikipedia in their own languages. We also enjoyed overwhelming media attention from local radio stations through to national tv broadcasters.
- What did not go well?
- There were a few challenges to the successful completion of this project. The first is the production of plaques overseas which proved very expensive. Communication with actual custodians of the selected sites was left with the installing company in the view that they had existing ties, hence delays were not controllable. A project of this magnitude needs full time attention and cannot be easily executed on the sole reliance of volunteers.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- We would make sure that plaques are produced locally.
- We would drive the communication with stakeholders and including custodians of selected sites.
- We would extend training or at least offer it to custodians of selected sites as they have intrinsic ability to drive traffic to the plaques on daily basis,
Project goal and measures of success
editThis section should reference the project goals and measures of success described in the approved grant submission. See Grants:PEG/WM ZA/joburgpedia-2013 to review the goals and metrics listed in the approved submission.
Project goal
edit- Provide the project goal here.
- The aim of this project is to increase Wikipedia coverage of iconic buildings around Johanesburg with historic and heritage importance. QR codes will be installed next to blue plaques in Johannesburg city in a bid to create the first MetropediA in Africa between the years 2013 through to 2015. This grant application is to cover outreach activities around the pilot phase of joburgpedia. We want to encourage citizens of this Metropolis to contribute content about the selected heritage sites in Wikipedia project of their choice.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.
- Of the 12 selected sites only 1 site was already covered to some extent on the English Wikipedia, that is the Orlando Stadium. The rest of the Sites lead to creation of new articles and improvement of related articles. For instance in order to write about the Rahima Moosa House, we had to first creat an Article on Rahima Moosa.
- We believe that more than anticipated awareness was created on the coverage of Johannesburg historical sites and its iconic people within the existing Wikipedia community in the country and as well as non-aligned heritage enthusiasts and the general public in Johannesburg. Content was contributed and continues to flow through from City of Johannesburg. The Heritage portal contributed content by adopting Creative Commons license, thus allowing us to use material on their website.
Measures of success
edit- List the measures of success exactly as provided in the approved grant submission, and evaluate your project according to each measure listed there.
- Increase the number of quality articles about heritage sites in and around Johannesburg on English Wikipedia.
- Create new quality articles about heritage sites in and around Johannesburg on small South African language Wikipedias.
- Encourage additional local Wikimedians join the Wikimedia ZA chapter and get involved in this outreach project.
- Activate City of Johannesburg and The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation to donate low resolution media files on selected heritage site onto Commons under free license.
- Activate Johannesburg heritage enthusiasts to contribute onto Wikipedia projects, especially small languages Wikipedias.
- Provide an overall assessment of how your project went according to these measures.
-
- Atleast 12 new articles were created on English Wikipedia and a third translated into smoke stubs in different local languages.
- Atleast two new users have taken interest in contributing to Wikipedia and Wikimedia ZA chapters. (Bobby Shabangu and Clement Khanye) after attending one of the Joburgpedia Events.
- CoJ has pushed through a Mayoral Committee approval of the Joburgpedia concerpt as well as permission to release some non-sensitive city archives to Joburgpedia.
- The Heritage Portal has partially adopted Creative Commons Licensing. Blue Plaques SA has fully adopted CC-Licensing.
- If you were to plan a similar project, would you measure it differently? If yes, please explain how.
- Yes we would use metric tools that are now available to track user retention and activity throughout and after the outreach events.
Impact
editThis section ties this project to Wikimedia's broader goals, and shows what the project accomplished.
- Increase participation
- This project has increased participation onto Wikipedia especially on small languages and is officially the only event in South Africa to have had multilingual editing on the same day and venue. The demographic of participants shows that Atleast 40% of all those who attended events were Female, hence giving us insight on what the female experience with Wikipedia in South Africa is.
- Improve quality
- The new articles that were submitted to the English Wikipedia passed stringent editorial requirements and thus attests to the quality of material that was donated. More than 50 Quality historic images were also submitted to commons under the following category and are being used to improve articles in multiple language Wikipedias.
- Increase reach
- This project received overwhelming attention on local and national media houses. Including warm reception within the Wikimedia Community as well. Links are presented below:
